Scrabble Chairman begs SWAN Members …donates 3 boards



Following the successful hosting of  the 7th edition of the Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classic in the State recently, the State Chairman of Scrabble Association Board, Mr. Umoh Bassey has apologized and pleaded with members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Akwa Ibom State chapter over their exemption at during the event. 

Mr. Umoh Bassey made this apology known to the state chapter of SWAN last week Friday during a press conference in Uyo.

The Chairman while pleading for forgiveness from SWAN members said it was an oversight and was not intentional “please gentlemen of the press, forgive me and forget, it will never happen again, it was an oversight”.

  After appealing to SWAN members, he went further to highlight the activities that took place during the event which was held at Le Meridian Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, with over 410 people in participation. A breakdown shows that 50 of the participants in attendance were foreigners including World Champions in Scrabble game. He disclosed that the tournament had four categories which include: Master, Intermediate, Open and Veteran categories.

Mr. Bassey said that although the tournament was a successful one, it was the responsibility of the State scrabble board to always host the competition yearly, adding that the board will do everything possible to take scrabble game to secondary schools and youths as well because the board has so far, procured over 150 scrabble boards and will be set to involve Secondary Schools next month for the next scrabble championship competition.
He however donated three (3) scrabble boards to the State Chapter of SWAN to be used for next year SWAN games.

Responding on behalf of SWAN members, the state chairman of SWAN, Mr. Uwem Ekoh said the members were not happy that an international event could take place in the state and SWAN members were not carried along. He thanked Mr. Umoh Bassey for his donation and promised a cordial relationship between SWAN members and the scrabble board.
