International Maritime Organisations’ Scribe Opens Critique Workshop

The critique workshop organised by the management of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, Oron to produce an acceptable document for the purpose of training Nigerians in maritime field and in line with international best standards was declared open last week by the IMO Secretary General’s Representative Mr. Ashok Mahapatra.

The Mahapatra who described the critique workshop as a worthwhile development expressed gratitude to the rector, Mr. Joshua Okpo for organising the workshop which he noted will boost staff productivity and promote quality service delivery. 

On his part, the chairman, Critique workshop, Mallam Sayid Adamu stated that the trend in Global Maritime Education and trainings all combine to make it mandatory for Nigeria to embark on higher education programmes at the degree and post graduate degree levels for rapid improvement of the country’s maritime personnel. He emphasized  that the academy has the mandate and it was sufficiently prepared and equipped to face the challenge. 

Adamu who is the Registrar of the academy hinted that in an effort aimed at upgrading the institution, the management of the academy under Mr. Joshua Okpo’s watch has embarked on massive infrastructural development, massive staff recruitment and curriculum development. 

He further revealed that management has released fund to various schools to develop curriculum on courses, for the proposed Maritime University adding that the various schools have already fashioned out a comprehensive review of curriculum into a degree awarding level in addition to developed new courses in the scheme of service in line with global best practices.

The registrar/Secretary to the Governing Council of the academy listed some of the Maritime Institutions that offer courses up to degree levels to include Australian Maritime College; Cidyia Maritime Academy; United States Merchant Marine Academy, Arab Maritime Transport Academy, among others. 

He however made a case for the academy to be given a degree awarding status.
