The Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Council, Obonganwan Gloria Useh has tasked the church to pray continuously for the overall wellbeing of Nigeria.
The council boss made this charge while paying a visit to Saint John the Baptist Monastery, Ikot Ekpene last weekend.

Useh noted that at this trying period of our national life, Nigeria needs prayers for peace, stability and progress. She commended the Catholic Church for citing the monastery in Ikot Ekpene and expressed optimism that the Area and indeed Akwa Ibom State would benefit from the religious exercise of the monks.
Responding, the Abbot General of The Order of Saint John the Baptist, Very Reverend Father Matthew Ekpo thanked the Council Boss for the visit. Father Ekpo said the monastery which was established in 1996 has made much progress including the establishment of the Pay University, Adiasim, Essien Udim which is about taking off among other Agro allied companies.

Father Ekpo maintained that the monastery so far has over 200 monks from across the country most of whom are graduates and masters degree holders. He called on the government to partner with religious organizations in the area of moral reformation which he noted was the bedrock of a virile nation.

Father Ekpo pledged the readiness of the monastery to contribute its quota towards the development of the State.
