The last may not have been heard of the
rumblings in Nsit Ubium politics following the return of Senator Effiong Bob.
The stage was Ikot
Ekwere Ubium last week where most
political bigwigs across the Elders, youths and women gathered at Bob’s
residence.
Senator Bob while
addressing the crowd stated that he is back to reclaim the political leadership
of Nist Ubium. The former Uyo Senator
hinted that the Party is one and that everyone should support President
Jonathan and Dr. Godswill Akpabio’s administrations.
Speaking further on
the political offices in Nist Ubium, the two time Senator claimed that he was
denied a third term to the senate because of zoning. He specifically said “for
now, I stand for zoning and that the House
of Assembly seat for the area come 2015 which presently has Barr. Onofiok Luke from Nsit Clan must be
zoned to Ubium Clan”.
Bob added that the
incumbent House of Assembly Representative from Nsit Ubium be told to look for
something else and do and that there is no law that forbids him (Effiong
Bob) from contesting the House of Assembly despite being a two time Senator.
Special Assistant to
Gov. Akpabio on petroleum matters. Mr. Emmanuel Ibiok called for unity amongst
the people of Nist Ubium and maintained that the importance of Unity in Nsit
Ubium cannot be overemphasized.
The immediate past
chairman of Nsit Ubium Surveyor Chris Ekpo who many at the event said has not
been seen in public since he left office said whatever gathering in Nsit Ubium
should not be viewed as a gathering for revenge and retaliation.
The State PDP officer representing Nsit Ubium,
Mr. Victor Brown observed that the problem in Nist Ubium have never been that
of the followership but that of leadership.
He cited a situation
where people who never labored politically for the Local Government will be rewarded with political offices at the expense of those
who toiled for the growth of the party and the Local Government.
He appealed to the Political
leadership of Nist Ubium to reconcile themselves noting that when they do, the
followership will be natural.
Meanwhile Senator Bob
who is currently the Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of
Benin has come under sever criticisms from the youths of Nsit Ubium for daring
to lay claim to the political leadership of the area.
A prominent youth
leader who would not want his name mentioned in print warned senator Effiong
Bob to restrict whatever political misgivings he has to his contemporaries and further
said that the youths of Nist Ubium will resist him and the political elites of
Nist Ubium should they dare trample the space of the youths which is held in
trust for them by Barr. Onofiok Luke.
Also hitting hard on
Bob, the supreme council of Nist Ubium youth leaders said second term in office
is strictly a function of performance and not that of zoning. The group
challenged Bob to mention one youth that he has empowered be it his biological
brother or any other Nsit Ubium person throughout his almost three decades in
political outing.
Ubium Youths Network
in their position said for three decades Bob has been a complete failure and
that in less than three years, Barr Onofiok Luke has given them hope. They
maintained while exchanging views with our reporter at Ikot Ekwere Ubium that
they will stop at noting to ensure that Onofiok Luke returns to the House of
Assembly owing to his outstanding performances.
Some student leaders
from Nsit Ubium while reacting to Bob’s position described the two time senator
as a noise maker who have failed to realize that power has since
left his hands. They however advised Bob and what they
described as the senator’s co travelers to desist from promoting mediocrity in
the politics of Nsit Ubium L.G.A. The student leadership maintained that
Onofiok Luke remains the best political office holder the area has ever
produced.
