The deadline for the final relocation of motor parks in the state capital to designated parks has been extended by two weeks.
This was part of the decision taken at an emergency meeting between the State Commissioner for Transport and Stakeholders in the transport industry.
Announcing the decision, the Commissioner for Transport Barr Austin Mbeh maintained that since laws were meant for man and not man for law, it was necessary for the rules to be amended to favour the people the rules were created for.
Barr Mbeh said the State Government agreed to this extension from the initial date of September 30th, in response to sundry pleas by the stakeholders and operators in the transport sector.
According to the Commissioner, notable reasons such as the national holiday which signals the Independence celebration on 1st October, as well as the ongoing renovations at the new temporary site of the Akwa Ibom Transport Company among other factors, necessitated the extension of the earlier deadline of September 30.
He said the state government had approved the State Abattoir located close the Timber market opposite the 20th anniversary Specialist Hospital at Itam as a temporary base for the Akwa Ibom Transport Company, and advised other private park operators in the state capital that he is ready to dialogue with them on ways of assisting them to adapt to the relocation directive.
The Transport boss acknowledged the general cooperation and understanding of the operators and advised them to take advantage of the good intentions of the government to complete their relocation to the designated parks at Ikot Akpe along Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Itam, Nung Oku and Mbiabong along Oron road.
He advised them to shun acts that could breach the peace in the state, and cautioned that government will not fail to deal decisively with those who show disregards to the government’s decision.
Barr Mbeh insisted that through unity and cooperation with each other, they should be rest assured that they will still benefit immensely from the state government’s action, which he emphasized was not directed at victimizing any person or group of person.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Barr Offiong Udofe also thanked the park operators for their show of maturity.
All the stakeholders present commended Barr Mbeh for his great spirit of understanding and assistance to the transporters and assured him of their cooperation.
Some of those present at the meeting included the Chairman of the Central Park Management Committee, Chief Clement Ekot, Elder Nsikak Johnny the Chief Executive Officer of Nsik Motors, Chief Imaikop Udosoro the State Chairman of National Association of Transport Owners, Mr Victor Eddie Principal Revenue agent, road tax and levies for Uyo Senatorial district, and officials of NURTW among others.
