Zonal retreat: NMA makes case for members entrepreneurial involvement

The South - South zone of the  Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in her 2016 zonal retreat over the weekend at the Orbit Galaxy Hotels, Uyo has made case for the medical practioners in the zone to see the need for Entrepreneurial involvement.

The event which had in attendance the NMA south - south chairman, Dr. Aniekeme Uwah, créme de la créme of NMA members across the south - south geopolitical zone and entrepreneurs, saw a carefully delivered lecture by an erudite entrepreneur Mr. Andy Eyo the executive director of Excellence Community Education welfare scheme (ECEWS) on the theme “The Doctor as an Entrepreneur”, which was set to urge the Medical practitioners to  engage in some other lucrative business in support of their basic profession.

In his lecture, Mr. Andy said that an entrepreneur is an individual who, rather than working as an employee, runs a small business and assumes all the risks and rewards of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered. He also enumerated the five (5) basic characteristics of an entrepreneur as follows; Motivation, Vision, Passion, Confidence and Decision making.

Mr. Eyo therefore reminded the professionals never should they forget the God factor as He is the center of every Vision which cannot be Right Ideas, and RightvLuck, Favour,vIgnored despite “our Prowess,  Direction, we all need Jesus Christ in our quest to be Great Entrepreneurs”. He furthered that doctors should not fold their alms waiting and relying only on thier salaries, but rather engage in some other things that they will never be found wanting.

Speaking with news men, Dr. Uwah, expressed sadness that the health sector in Nigeria is not well funded with just six percent (6%) of the federal allocation, which delays health care delivery in the nation, thereby initiating the retreat to aid doctors to diversify into other areas to make themselves better.

When asked if doctors will not be distracted in their job while they engage in some other thing, hear him “No, they will not be distracted, the fact that they are working without pay, is the worst distraction already, as am speaking to you now the doctors at the university of you teaching hospital have not been paid their 2016 December salary, and we are almost in February 2017, that is enough distraction because they are human beings too and they have responsibilities”.

He furthered that doctors are not told to use their official hours, but at their spare time, can venture to other things that will keep them going while their salaries don’t come as at when due, so as to pay their bills.

In his part, the past president of NMA and also the Special guest on the occasion Dr. Osahon Enabulele lauded the Akwa Ibom state NMA for hosting an epoch event like this, which is the first of its kind, while wishing more of it soon.

He stressed on the need for doctors to as well occupy some key political offices so as to have the interest of the profession at heart, thereby saying that It’s not all about throwing doctors into politics, but better kind of doctors that know what they are there for.

High point of the event where good will messages by chairmen of Delta state NMA, Rivers state, Cross River state, Bayelsa State and other dignitaries respectively.
