A High Court Judge in Akwa Ibom State, His Lordship, Justice Ekerette Ebienyie has appealed to members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) to intensify effort in crime prevention and in educating members of the masses on the workings of the Nigeria Police.
Justice Ebienyie made this appeal last Saturday at the Civic Center, Ibong Ikot Akan in Ikot Ekpene during the conferment of Honorary Membership Award on Uko Ikot Ekpene, Engineer Udo Tom Essien by the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Ikot Ekpene Area Command.
Justice Ebienyie bemoaned a situation where people are arrested by the Police for crimes committed by members of their families while PCRC members were busy arranging bail.
In his words,” today in our communities we still see a situation where the police arrest innocent people for crimes committed by either their siblings or other family members. This is very wrong and not in line with the rules. I think this happens because PCRC members are not doing enough in terms of enlightenment”. He said this was contradictory to Article 5.1 and 5.2 of the PCRC rules.
Earlier, the Chairman on the occasion, Prof. Felicia Etim thanked the PCRC on the conferment on Honorary Award on Engr. U. T. Essien describing the Awardee as a man of integrity and one committed to the development of his community. “Engr. Udo Tom Essien is one man we respect so much in this community. He is a disciplinarian and a man of unparallel integrity who loves his community so much and does everything within his power to help it develop. This award is indeed deserving and I thank PCRC for honoring him.”
Others who spoke during the occasion include Emeritus Prof. Kendrick Udo of the University of Ibadan and Pastor Sunny Ibuot, Secretary Akwa Ibom State Committee on Agriculture and Food sufficiency who both eulogized the award recipient, Engr. Udo Tom Essien describing the award as deserving.
Performing the installation, the Chairman PCRC Ikot Ekpene Area Command, Elder Macauly Akpan said Engr. Udo Tom Essien was a leader of unblemished reputation whose performance and antecedents earned him the honor by the association. He expressed optimism that with conferment, Engr. Essien will do more for the society and PCRC.
Responding, the award recipient, Engr. Udo Tom Essien flanked by the wife said he was humbled by the honor done him and promised to do more to impact the society. “I am humbled by this honor, it means my little efforts are not unnoticed. To me, this is an encouragement to me and others to do more for the society.”
