Akwa Ibom Former Speaker Escapes Kidnapping on the Way to Hideout
The former speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barrister Bassey Essien last Thursday, narrowly escaped from suspected kidnappers on the way to their unknown hideout.

It was gathered that the kidnappers have stormed the hometown of the former lawmaker at Etebi Mbakuyo, Esit Eket local government area where they traced him to his palm tree plantation farm in the community and forcefully took him away after several gun shots were fired which left residents of the community panicking and scampering for safety.

Information from reliable sources in the community indicates that the suspected kidnappers were using motorcycles to trace the former speaker to the farm.

Sources told our reporters that the gunmen, after arresting the victim, forced him into his own personal vehicle and drove away.

However, they started encountering troubles when the victim’s vehicle developed faults along the Etebi-Oruko road where they were said to have taken.

While they were struggling with the faulty vehicle with their victim, it was gathered that the victim was removed from the vehicle to a motorcycle and moved on to their hideout, leaving the faulty vehicle behind.

Unfortunately, luck ran away from them when the motorcycle they carried the victim on also developed faults (flattened tire) in Udung Uwe community in Urue Ofong Oruko local government area.

At this point, the former Speaker is said to have screamed out in Oro dialect that these people are kidnappers taking him away to where he does not know. This scream attracted the attention of youths of the community who quickly began to launch attacks on the hoodlums.

Our crime desk gathered from Eye witnesses in Urueoffong Oruko community that security agents were also alerted and a search for the four men was intensified.

The suspected kidnappers were however apprehended and have since been cooling off in the Anti Kidnapping section of the Police cell at the State Police headquarters at Ikot Akpanabia.

The suspected kidnappers police sources say have already made confessional statements that will lead to the bursting of crimes in some areas of the country.

Earlier at Urueoffong Oruko where the suspects were apprehended, sources hinted THE INK crime desk that the kidnappers had told their victim, the former Speaker that they were paid the sum of three hundred thousand naira to kill him. And that Bassey Essien should pay them seven hundred thousand dollars if they have to save his life.

They are alleged to have also said that they were the people that kidnapped the paramount Ruler of Esit Eket Local Government Area Edidem Ubong Peter Assam and a sister to Sir Bassey Dan Abia the former MD of NDDC.

Our crime desk also gathered that the kidnappers had told Barr Essien that they had earlier released the Esit Eket Paramount Ruler after a ransome was paid. They are said to have added that the paramount Ruler was still indebted to them as at the time Barr Bassey Essien was kidnapped.

One of the kidnappers, the ring leader of the kidnap squad is said to hail from Uquo in Esit Eket Local Government Area.

The kidnappers our newsdesk was informed had fingered a certain native doctor as the one that is always prepares charms for them for operations.
Meanwhile, the Supervisor for Youths, Sports and Special Duties in Esit Eket Local Government Area, Comrade Godwin Elijah has condemned in the strongest of terms the kidnap of Chief. Barr Bassey Essien which he described as Barbaric and most unreasonable.

The Youth leader while exchanging views with our reporter yesterday in Esit Eket said it is very sad that despite the language and message of rising to the faith of greatness that the State Governor Deacon Emmanuel is preaching that people are still bent on crimes.

He called on the kidnappers to turn a new leaf as such acts will not and cannot pay them.

Elijah said, no matter how smart anyone feels he is, that the long arm of the law will always catch up with the person.

The youth Supervisor further appealed to all sons and daughters of Esit Eket not to capitalize on the economic recession the country is facing now as an excuse to go into crime.

He said since God is God, he will always protect his children. Godwin Elijah furthered that the peace the state is enjoying should not be cut short by anyone no matter how hungry he is.
