Tradition and culture should not violent human right …says Human Right Commission

The Chairman Human Rights Commission  Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Anthony A. Iji has said that tradition and culture should not be used as an apparatus to violet human rights because the law must surely take its course without compromise.

The Chainman Human Right Commission Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Anthony A. Iji gave the advised while speaking with journalists during the workshop of training and educating citizens about violation of human right in Itu Local Government. 

He said there is no doubt that tradition and culture exist but not to victimized the people over their fundamental human right over their activities, that is where the challenge and problems lies especially the issue of widow experiencing torture from her late husband’s family and to crown it all sexual harassment or refusal to accept any members of the family as husband, forceful marriage etc.

while this are not encouraging development in our society, needs urgent step as the commission uses the workshop to educate them the significant of human right violation.

According to him, the commission would not relent over its responsibilities to make sure the people are properly educated on human right violation while made them to understand the commission has established effective complain treatment mechanism to accommodate their problems, challenges at their various level, giving the full assistant to solve their problems.

He said the Human Right Commission has been committed to the promotion of human right through mass media campaign, face to face interaction and the dissemination of IEC materials just as what we are doing in Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency for them to acknowledge and understand their human right and fundamental freedom.

The Chairman appreciate the level of understanding by the people of Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency came out enmass to be educated over the issue that has been bothering the society which is violation of human right and believed would extend the message to their people for them to take advantage on it for their own interest and benefit. 

While the lecture for them to become great entrepreneurs would not be waste but for them to take advantage on it for future purpose which would also assist in boosting the State economy.
