Lawmaker lauds monarch’s role in maintaining peace in Ibiono Ibom  

The member representing Ibiono Ibom state constituency in the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Barrister Ime Okon has lauded the role of the Okuku of Ibiono Ibom, His Highness, Okuku Essien Ebong XVII in ensuring sustainable peace in his domain which he noted was critical to unity and progress of the constituency. 

Okon who’s the House deputy leader gave the monarch kudos yesterday, when he paid homage to him in his palace in Obio Ibiono- the ancestral home of the Ibiono Ibom people. The Okuku of Ibiono Ibom is regarded as the chief priest of the Ibiono Ibom deity.  

The House deputy leader lauded the cordial relationship existing between the Okuku and the paramount ruler of Ibiono Ibom, and noted that the cordiality was the tonic that has fostered peace, unity and harmony among the people of Ibiono Ibom. He appealed to the traditional institution to sustain the tempo.  

“I must first of all commend the cordial relationship between you and the paramount ruler and for accepting to work with him in maintaining peace in Ibiono Ibom, and that has helped in calming nerves in ibiono Ibom”, Okon said.   


He mentioned that his visit to the monarch was in recognition of the strategic and important position of the traditional institution in nation building, especially in maintaining security, peace and order in their various domains which he observed has assisted the security agencies in the maintenance of law and order for development to thrive in communities.  He also pledged to offer material assistance to cater for the welfare need of the monarch in keeping with his avowed commitment to according dignity to the traditional institution.  

Responding, the Okuku of Ibiono Ibom expressed gratitude to the lawyer cum politician for the visit, which he noted was the first by any public office holder from the area in recent times.  He commended the lawmaker for his leading role in ensuring that the abandoned Government technical college in Ikot Ada Idem, Ibiono Ibom received due attention of the state government. He urged the state government to ensure the urgent need to bring the college back to life.  

He noted that the lawmaker was representing the interest of Ibiono Ibom well in the House, and charged him not to rest on his oars as much was still needed to be done in terms of infrastructural development. The monarch called on the state government to consider constructing a road in Obio Ibiono in view of the significant role of the area in the socio-cultural and political evolution of Ibiono Ibom.  

The monarch also called on the state government to accord due recognition to the stool of the Okuku of Ibiono Ibom.  He appealed to the lawmaker to use his good office to broker peace among the contending factions in the selection of a village head for the area.
