The immediate past Governor and Senate Minority Leader, Chief Godswill Akpabio has applauded the unity and peace that has characterized the political atmosphere of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and promised to massively empower his people as he marks two years in office, even as he expressed satisfaction at Governor Udom Emmanuel’s commitment to ensuring better welfare for the citizenry, through practicable economic programmes, reforms and policies.

Senator Akpabio made this known at his Ukana Ikot Ntuen country home, when he briefed members of the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Welfare Steering Committee on his activities, projects and preparation for the Senatorial briefing.

He announced plans to award university scholarships to 500 students of the district and tasked members of the committee to accord indigent people priority in their selection, and expressed the belief that investment in education was his topmost consideration.

On other packages billed for the briefing, the Minority Leader said the event, which is planned for May would have also feature commissioning of about 38 life-touching projects executed by him across the district including school blocks, markets, roads, erosion control, solar water, health centers and town halls, as part of his 2016 projects.

The former state chief executive listed empowerment items to be distributed to constituents to include tractors; 65 block molding machines and accessories; industrial sewing machines; truck tricycles, 674 units of 4.5 KVA generating sets, industrial grinding machines, 100 computer sets and accessories, as well as cars.

Chief Akpabio announced the leadership of the welfare steering committee to include Sir Emem Akpabio as Chairman while Elder Aniekan Umanah is to serve as Secretary, with the mandate to identify other areas of need to be included in subsequent empowerment programmes and advised that beneficiaries should be closely monitored to judiciously utilize what they are given.

Speaking on the need to mobilize people to participate in the continuous voters registration by INEC, Senator Akpabio advocated the importance of ensuring strict compliance to sustain the political relevance of the area, saying the success of the exercise would greatly facilitate the district’s support for Governor Udom Emmanuel’s 2019 return bid.

Appreciating Senator Akpabio’s gesture of always putting the people first, Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Sir Etekamba Umoren eulogized his uncommon representation of the district at the Red chambers, saying he has raised the bar of legislative accountability.

On his part, the Senatorial District Chairman Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Cletus Eshiet, expressed the peoples’ confidence in Senator Akpabio’s leadership noting that his continued support for Governor Udom Emmanuel and effort at giving the state a voice in the National Assembly has not gone unnoticed.

Stakeholders including Senator Emmanuel Ibokessien, Sir Udo Kierian Akpan, Chief M. A. Afangideh, Chief A.S. Akpan, Victoria Thomas, Hon. Imo Ibokette, Elder Aniekan Akpan, Barr. Godwill Umoh and Hon. Udo Ibanga Esu, bared their minds on the gains and prospects of Akpabio’s qualitative representation and declared their support for his 2019 return bid to the Senate.
