ICAN to name proposed secretariat after Udom Emmanuel
Following a motion moved by Barr. Effiong Akwa FCA, chartered accountants in Akwa Ibom state have resolved to name their proposed secretariat after Gov. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel for appointing their members into key positions in his administration.

According to him, ‘this is the first time a sitting Governor has appointed members of institute of chartered accountants (ICAN) as the state accountant-general, permanent secretary of ministry of finance, auditor-general of the state and that of the local government’.

‘For this and many other good things the Governor has done, I think he deserves the honour and even more’, he stated.

The motion which was adopted by the entire accountants present at the reception of the visiting national president of the institute, Deacon Titus AlaoSoetan FCA, and his entourage held at information centre, office of the accountant-general in IdongesitNkanga secretariat, was seconded by the bursar of the University of Uyo.

Keying into the motion, the president assured that his council was in support of any move by members of the institute in the state to honour one of their own who has done well.


He used the opportunity to advise members in positions of trust to shine the light, warning that council will not be in position to back anyone who has betrayed the trust.

‘Wherever you are shine the light, any responsibility assigned to you make sure you do it very well and keep the flag flying’, he said.

The president who received the news of land acquisition with gladness promised to table the requests of the district society, especially waver of the premium on the land before the state chief executive for consideration, promised to support the project with 50% as stipulated in the constitution.

During the interactive session, the president reminded them of the existence of an insurance scheme which enables families of dead members to be paid a sum of N1.5m, but warned that for the family to benefit the deceased must have paid his deposit up to date before death.

Similarly, he announced that as part of welfare scheme, elderly members who are up to sixty five years and above are exempted from further payment of deposit provided they have paid it up to date before they clock 65.

Other members of the entourage also participated in the interactive session, either by shedding light on some grey areas which had worried for so long before now.

Earlier in his welcome address the state and district society chairman, Dr.MboboMbobo expressed happiness over the achievements of the institute under the watch of the visiting president, saying if it were possible he would have asked for tenure elongation to enable him to do more.

The state chairman, who identified his major challenge to be lukewarm attitude of members towards meeting, however commended their colleagues in government for their contributions to ICAN activities in the state.

He informed the president of the land to build the proposed ICAN secretariat, but pleaded with him to appeal to Governor Udom to wave the premium charge on it and also assist them with finances to erect a befitting structure that would be all accommodating.

Other activities of the three- day- visit of the president included dinner with the Governor, meeting with the student members in the university of Uyo and inspection of land to build the secretariat.
