On Wednesday last week, the Commander 2nd Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Uyo, Brigadier General Abdul Ibrahim Hassan with some of his military chiefs stormed the Akwa Ibom State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ on courtesy call.
During that visit, Commaderie were exchanged. The military Chief took time to explain the purpose of the visit and what he views the Press in Akwa Ibom as.
When he spoke, he sounded cultured and matured. His manners were superb typical of a military man that is worth his onions. While I join my voice in welcoming this Brigade, I will wish to sincerely appreciate this soft looking General for identifying the Press as a dependable ally to fraternize with. This visit gives hope that while some politicians see the Press as troublesome, the military sees them as an asset.
The attribute exhibited by Hassan makes it easy for a proper understanding of this man as a General who is first of all human. What is even more relevant in that August visitor in the month of April is that the military brass were accorded the opportunity to understand at least a little about the workings of the Press.
Trust us; we (the media) made case against the brutality of the civilians by the military. And General Hassan confidently told us that his men have undergone the best of training in handling civilians even when provoked.
That was relieving enough. To this end, Gen. Hassan deserves our support. I mean the support of all Akwa Ibomites. On a later time, I will offer some pieces of advice to this humble General of the Nigerian Army. But for now, let me encourage him to enjoy the serenity of our state, the freshness and nutritious meals we have.
Feel at home Sir, you are our brother and we shall rub your back while you rub ours too. WELCOME TO THE LAND OF PROMISE. Brig. Gen. Abdul Ibrahim Hassan. Peace not war…ooo.
