The member representing Onna State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Otuekong Hon Nse Essien has been coronated as ‘Essang Ibiono Ibom’ by the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom LGA and Ibom Ibiono, HRM Okuku (Dr) Ime Udousoro Inyang at a colourful ceremony at his palace at Ikot Udom, Ibiono Ibom last Monday.
Essien who was accompanied to the event by a large number of Onna political stakeholders, friends and youths said he feels delighted by the honour.
‘’ I’m particularly honoured by the good people of Ibiono Ibom with this chieftaincy title, not too long ago, l was also given Obong Unwana chieftaincy title by my people at Ikot Akpan Nkor in Onna, it goes to show that my little contribution to humanity is greatly appreciated and it can only spur me to continue adding value to humanity ‘’ the lawmaker noted.
In his remarks, the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom, HRM Okuku (Dr) Ime Udousoro Inyang said ‘’We are thankful to God that both the federal government and Akwa Ibom State government have from time to time recognized our sons and daughters and appointed them into positions of trust. Last Saturday, we held a reception for our dear son, Prof Enefiok Essien of the University of Uyo on account of his appointment as Vice Chancellor of a University, it is an honour and he deserves it. His people had first honoured him on 23nd December,2013 with the title of ‘’Ata Ifiok mbet Ibiono Ibom’’ the monarch pointed out.
He added that the citations of those we want to honour speak for them but suffice it for me to announce their names at this stage. They are- Otuekong (Hon) Nse Essien, Engr Tony Udoekong, Mrs Helen Nsima Umoh and Dr Godwin Okon Daniel. They are to be honoured respectively as Essang, Iboto, Eduek and Ifuud Ibiono Ibom. The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon (Barr) Onofiok Luke was honoured with a certificate of recognition for distinguished services to the people.
A peep into Otuekong Hon Nse Essien citation shows that he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language which he earned from the University of Uyo in1995. Essien started to develop leadership and service skills right from his student days where he held several leadership positions including serving as Captain, University of Uyo Football Team. Later he served as Assistant Secretary, National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students (NAKISS) in 1994, Vice Chairman Akwa Ibom Youth Council between 2003 and 2008.
He emerged as Secretary to Onna Local Government Council 2012, a position he held till 2014. Following his election into the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as member representing Onna State constituency in 2015, he has played roles in the State Legislature holding strategic positions like Deputy Chief Whip, Chairman of the House Committee on investment, industry, Commerce and Tourism as well as Vice Chairman House Committee on Sports among others.
Very recently following his deep interest, investment and commitment to the development of football in the State, the man who has become known as the pillar of sports in Akwa Ibom State was appointed Technical Director of All football teams owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government, a responsibility which effectively placed him in charge of Akwa United Football Club, Akwa Starlets Football Club and Ibom Angels FC. INDO as he is fondly called by supporters has executed several empowerment programmes for various segments of Akwa Ibom community.
Also speaking at the event, the Secretary of the Palace Council and Deputy Leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Ime Bassey Okon called on the titled holders to see themselves as part and parcel of the palace and Ibiono Ibom while showing interest in the growth of the Local Government. Okon urged them to support the paramount Ruler at all times as their coronation brings to 57 the number of titled Chiefs installed by the Paramount Ruler.
The Speaker of the AKHA, Barr, Onofiok Luke appreciated the Paramount Ruler for the honour done him and his colleague as well as other recipients and called for a more united Akwa Ibom even as he sued for support for Mr Udom Emmanuel the Governor to complete a second term given his prudent management of the State’s resources. He said the Monarch has over the years been very consistent with uncanny courage to direct the path of the political class and encourage same to think more about the people. Luke said he will liaise with the Secretary of the palace who is a very supportive colleague with quality advice to see how he can add value to the palace.
Cultural groups’ added colour to the event as the Paramount Ruler feted his guests to an amazing banquet.
