Flood destroys several houses in Ibeno of A’Ibom

Ibeno (Akwa Ibom), July 7, 2014, Flood have destroyed several houses in Iwuo okpom and Inua Eyet Ikot communities in Ibeno local Government Area of Akwa Ibom thereby rendering the people homeless.

Chief John Etim, the Chairman of Iwuo-Okpom Town Council in Ibeno stated this while conducting newsmen around the flooded area newsmen on Monday in Ibeno.
He said that the heavy down pour on Wednesday 2nd July which lasted for six hours rendered 30 families homeless.

He said that the communities affected during the heavy down pour are Iwuo-okpom and Inua-Eyet Ikot communities, adding that houses and roads were flooded in the communities.
He further said that water enter Mobil dormitory, adding that the flood was pump out by pumping machine.

“The whole town was flooded and flood entered several houses in the communities. The two villages share one canal and most water from the swamp passes through one place to the Atlantic Ocean,’’ he said.

He lamented that there was no good drainage system in the communities.

“If ExxonMobil was carrying out a good corporate social responsibility, since the flood affected them, they should have come to her aid but they only succeeded in pumping water from their dormitory and not minding what happens to their host community,’’ he said.

According to him, the major cause of the erosion is as a result of poor drainage system within the two communities were seen flooded, houses

Etim appealed to the state government to give relief materials to the communities in order to alleviate the suffering of the people.

He called on the government to construct permanent drainage system within the affected communities to avoid re-occurrence
