NDLEA rehabilitates 137 drug peddlers in A’Ibom

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Eket, Akwa Ibom Command says that it has rehabilitated 137 drug peddlers in the state.

Mrs Imaette Umouman, the Unit Commander of NDLEA in Eket stated this during the sensitization rally to mark the World Drug-Free Day 2014, in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
She said of the 137 rehabilitated, 128 are males while nine are females.

According to her, in Akwa Ibom Command do partial rehabilitation.
“These are people that have been victims of drug abuse, some are brought in by their parents while some after the arresting the smokers we cancel them and rehabilitate them.
“We cancel some and take some to the hospitals for treatment and rehabilitate them for some months so that they can become useful again,’’ she said.

She said that objective was to enlighten the public on the dangers of taking illicit substances like hemp, cocaine, heroin, gateway drugs and combine among others.

“Our aim is to create awareness so that the public will be aware on dangers of illicit drugs because there is an adage that says my people perish for lack of knowledge,’’ she said.
Our reports that the rally started at the NDLEA office and move along major streets in Eket and its environs.

The sensitization programme involves secondary school students, Corps Members, road safety, teachers, Police and NDLEA officers participated in the rally.
The Theme of this years is “A message of hope; Substance abuse disorders is treatable and preventable.’’

She said that theme of programme is apt because there is hope for the victims and still becomes useful again to the society.

Our Correspondent reports that the enlightenment programmes were carrying out in places such as schools, markets, Motor Parks, along the streets, prisons, police station, Traditional Ruler’s Palace.
She said that that command had carried out enlightenment programmes in 65 different places across the state, adding that if the people are aware of the dangers they would not take the substances again.
She noted that the command had convicted 14 suspected drug peddlers in the state.
Umouman advised drug users to stay off drugs completely, saying that there is no gain in take the illicit substance
