More groups have continued to identify with the gubernatorial aspiration of former Finance Commissioner, Mr. Bassey Albert Akpan.
The latest is an umbrella women organization in Akwa Ibom State christened Akwa Ibom State Women Vanguard also known as The Choice Women whose mission, according to her state coordinator, Lovelene Asanga is to mobilize Akwa Ibom populace to defend democratic processes and good governance through proper nomination exercise and election into political offices in the state in 2015.
The group in a press release made available to newsmen said it has adopted Mr. Bassey Albert Akpan as its candidate for Akwa Ibom State Governorship election in 2015 and is currently setting up structures in wards across the state with the mandate of taking the campaign for Mr. Akpan to villages and families in the state.
A statement made available to the press reads: “At an enlarged meeting of Akwa Ibom State Women Vanguard also known as De Choice Women on Wednesday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital, the following resolutions were reached regarding the 2015 general elections.
“It was resolved that Akwa Ibom State Women Vanguard adopts and supports Mr. Bassey Albert Akpan as governorship candidate for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party for the 2015 general election and immediately take his campaign to the rural communities in Akwa Ibom State.
“In furtherance of the above resolution, it was agreed that Akwa Ibom State Women Vanguard starts inaugurating structures of the vanguard across wards in Akwa Ibom State with a mandate to inaugurate village structures with a mandate to start creating awareness about Mr. Bassey Albert Akpan’s governorship ambition and the need to safe-keep their voters card to vote for the candidate in 2015 as governor of Akwa Ibom State.
“It was also resolved that Akwa Ibom Democratic Project, AKDP, be commended for adopting Mr. Bassey Akpan as its sole candidate for the governorship race as well as a call being sent to other groups in Akwa Ibom State to close rounds to ensure the emergence of Mr. Akpan as governor in 2015. In resolving thus, we note that coming together in unity for the actualization of the governorship dream of Mr. Akpan is in the best interest of Akwa Ibom State”
The resolution which was signed by twenty eight (28) Local Government Coordinators said endorsing Bassey Akpan was after a careful appraisal of the aspirants and their record of service in the last seven years. It said the decision followed a motion raised by Charity Antai who coordinates Mbo Chapter that an aspirant be adopted and sold to teeming members of the group since mobilization for political purposes cannot be done in a vacuum.
“The motion was seconded by Mrs. Mercy Anthony Akpan, chapter coordinator for Uruan who said since the group has passed the strategic stage of setting up of chapter structures, it was high time, it pointed to a direction for members to follow regarding the governorship race. The state Cordinator and chairperson, Lovelene Asanga after adopting the motion raised names of gubernatorial aspirants for adoption.
“Twenty eight coordinators were present. 19 voted for Mr. Bassey Albert. After the results was announced, five coordinators shifted their stand in favor of Mr. Akpan thereby raising his votes to 24.
“The general thinking among the coordinators of Akwa Ibom State Women Vanguard also known as De Choice women is that His Excellency, Dr Godswill Akpabio, executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State has performed very well in all facet of Akwa Ibom State. It was generally held that Mr. Bassey Albert Akpan who has managed Akwa Ibom State finances in the last seven (7) years and supervised the magnificent projects and inter-ministerial Direct Labour Jobs in Akwa Ibom State was central to the success story of the administration.
“It was thus agreed that to continue from where His Excellency, Chief Godswill Akpabio will stop and raise the ante in 2015, Mr. Bassey Albert is the best option for Akwa Ibom State. Our position is without prejudice to any governorship aspirant but we firmly belief that Mr. Bassey Akpan is the best option for Akwa Ibom State and urged Akwa Ibomites to join the campaign to ensure that he emerges successful in 2015” the group said.
Akwa Ibom Women Vanguard also passed a Vote of Confidence on President Goodluck Jonathan urging him to re-contest as President of Nigeria in 2015. The group said President Jonathan has performed creditably in office barring what they termed “temporary setbacks in the area of security in Northern Nigeria” which they noted has resulted in the loss of lives and property.
“We hereby pass a Vote of Confidence on our National Leader and President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR given his sterling achievements in office and accordingly, call on Mr. President to re-contest the 2015 election for a second term. We assure Mr. President of our unalloyed support as we shall join other Nigerians to mobilize support towards winning the election.
“If Mr. President retains the Presidency, it will bring a good mix to Akwa Ibom State governed by Mr. Bassey Albert in 2015; the benefits of democracy shall tripled” the group said, urging that “this resolution should be published for record purposes, guidance and general notice”.
