There have continuously been an air of tension hanging around the state over the deliberate attempt by men of the DSS to frustrate efforts made towards the release of Thomas Thomas, an Editor with Global concord newspapers who is spending his fifteenth day at their custody today.
THE INK learnt that after the Global Concord Editor was last seen penultimate Friday, all efforts to see him has since been abortive. A senior SSS officer who interacted with one of the brothers is said to have informed that he will have to wait until the Director gives instructions that Thomas be seen by anybody before such permission is granted.
Both family members and lawyers of the detained Editor have been denied access to the Nsit Ibom born man whose only crime was to raise an alarm on a purported move by agents of Government to kill the paramount rulers of Ibiono Ibom and that of Etinan Local Government Area. The continous denial of access to the Global Concord man has fueled speculations that the life of the Editor may not be going on very well.
And most worrisome is the fact that ever since his nicodemus charge to court in an ungodly court hours, nothing have been heard on the matter again at the court. Although the Global Concord as a team have since charged the matter to a court of competent jurisdiction, it was however not clear whether Government is willing to join issues with the news medium.
Our news desk gathered that Thomas is incarcerated by men of the SSS on the orders from above and that the sin of the youngman was because he published a story linking Akpabio and others to an alleged attempt to kill two Ibibio paramnount rulers.
The story of the killing is that Thomas had recorded a voice note of the person who called him to give him the information and it is only going to be natural that the Editor be allowed freedom while the case continues in court. Genuine concerns have been raised as to the safety of Thomas due to ugly experiences others who passed through the same route have had to tell. It is sad that the security agencies have since denied Thomas Freedom despite the fact that the evidence on phone was played to the listening pleasure of some of them. At this point, one only hopes and belief that the SSS and Government do not cross the line of sanity as the story on this matter unfolds.
But for the story that Thomas concocted a voice and thereafter took it to the paramounbt rulers in question. One can only say that is a flat lie. A person like Thomas Thomas is too decent for such expensive jokes. Since the SSS are with the phone were the audio was recorded, it will be of utmost help to the society and the state for them to begin a search for the source and not continue detain Thomas.
The continous incarceration of Thomas is spoiling the image of the Governor and the SSS and has a heavy platform to balkanize the NUJ which is already tension soaked as aresult of the split of the union into those sympathetic to Thomas predicament and those who feel the NUJ was right in whatever complications they are accused of.
