G-9 Unity Cup competition kicks off in Uyo BY CHARLES SOLOMON

The G-9 football competition for the Nine Local Government Areas making up the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District has commenced in Uyo. In the inaugural match played on Saturday, 5th July, 2014, at the St. Philips Primary School field, Use Offot, Uyo, the Uyo Local government area team defeated Ibesikpo Asutan team by three goals to one to claim the three points at stake.

Gideon Peter, wearing Jersey no. 13 for the Ibesikpo Asutan team opened the score line with a wonderful strike from the 18 yard box to put the visitors in the lead before the end of first half.

When referee Godwin Ukpe signalled for the commencement of the 2nd 45 minutes, an offensive mood dominated the entire departments of the game, sending penetrating passes to the strikers who were denied the much needed equaliser by the safe hands of the Ibesikpo Asutan goalkeeper.

Elerins James wearing Jersey no. 10 for the Uyo team delivered a delicious pass to Nsisong Joseph whose powerful volley was stopped by the undaunted Ibesikpo Asutan goalie.


The captain of the Uyo team, Pius Etim made a fine breakthrough from the midfield racing past the defenders and beating the post to score the equaliser for his team.

Uwem Charles who substituted Nsisong Joseph produced a sensational free kick after Elerins was fouled outside the 18 yard box. Uwem’s shot went into the top left hand corner of the Ibesikpo Asutan team to give the Uyo team the lead before the half hour mark.

Bassey Urua completed the score-line before the end of 90 minutes when he dribbled past two defenders to put behind the Ibesikpo Asutan goalkeeper.

In a past match briefing, Coach Sinaji Kamara praised his team for coming from one goal down to beat their opponents with 3-1. The technical adviser of the Uyo team was also full of praises for the bravery of his players who claimed the maximum three points at stake.

The G-9 unity cup competition is divided into three groups: group “A” comprises of Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, Uruan and Nsit Atai local government areas, while group “B” is made up of Etinan, Nsit Ubium and Nsit Ibom Local Government Areas. Ibiono Ibom and Itu are the two teams in group “C”. The ground finale is slated for Saturday, 16th August, 2014 at the Uyo township stadium.

The President of G-9, Mr. Donatus Etim on behalf of the organizers of the competition, in a speech before the commencement of the match said that the G-9 unity cup competition is aimed at consolidating on the already existing bond among the Nine Local Government Areas of Uyo Senatorial District. He expressed his gratitude to the immediate past secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Obong Umana Okon Umana for his support to the organizing committee of the competition. 

He also expressed his appreciation to Hon. (Barr) Onofiok Luke, member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and the immediate past commissioner for finance, Hon. Bassey Albert Akpan for their encouragement towards the successful kickoff of the competition.
