Ak Dep Gov charges NEMA on quality of relief materials

Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Lady Valerie Ebe, has called on National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to improve on the quality of relief materials sent to the state.

Lady Ebe, who is the Chairman of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), stated this when members South-South Zone of NEMA, led by its Coordinator, Dr Onimode Bandele, who in state on inspection of disaster intervention programmes, called on her at Government House, Uyo.

The Deputy Governor said NEMA, as a proactive emergency agency, has risen to the challenges posed by disaster nationwide.

She commended the Management of NEMA for putting in place an effective team to tackle the disaster problems in the various zones of the countries, adding that despite the uncommon transformation programmes witnessed in the state, some areas were still affected by perennial incidence of flood occasioned by the peculiar topography.

Lady Ebe said the relief material given to victims of disaster does not address their peculiar needs, maintaining that some of their victims were in need of building materials for rehabilitation, and called on NEMA officials to exercise quality control on the relief items, especially food stuff.

The South-South Zonal Co-ordinator of NEMA, Dr. Onimode Bandele, conveyed the appreciation of the Director General NEMA, Alhaji Sani Sidi, to the State Government for complimenting the efforts of NEMA through the establishment of the SEMA as well as infrastructural development in the state.
Dr Bandele called for the equipping of the Agency with utility vehicles, fighting Trucks, ambulances and tankers to assist in the control of disasters such as flood and fire, assuring that NEMA was prepared to tackle flood disasters in the zone.

At the end of an inspection tour of disaster prone area of Urua Ikpa Road, Nkemba Lane and IBB Way, Dr. Bandele called on residents to cultivate habits that will help open up the drainage system and charged Town Planners to discourage buildings along waterways.
