Barr. Ime Okon, member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has expressed concern of students to maximize the benefits of the internet to their academic detriment.
Okon stated this on the occasion of award of prizes to the Winners of the 3rd Edition of his annual quiz competition for schools in Ibiono Ibom on Wednesday.
“It is worrisome to observe that large populations of our students and youths have tended to maximize the benefits of the internet to their academic detriment.
“Our youths must not allow the internet and social media to destroy them,’’ he said.
He said that the quiz competition has help in strengthening the cognitive abilities of our pupils and students, but the negative impact of social media on students must be addressed as a matter of deliberate efforts to preserve and protect our educational system.
Okon said that education remains the bedrock of development in nay society, adding that the he has decided to extend the completion to accommodate students at the junior secondary school level.
According to him, as the competition progresses, it shall be expanded to cover the senior secondary school level.
He enjoined parents and teachers to rise to the challenges being posed by the misuse of internet and social media, saying that all stakeholders must join hands to bring back the reading culture among the students.

He said that the rate at which youths have addicted themselves to the use of abbreviations and short messaging system (SMS), through mobile devices and social media platforms in their communication has impacted negatively on the usage of English as a standard means of communication in their academic pursuits and public communication.
Okon said that if the trend should continue unchecked, its impact on the quality of graduates in the country can only be imagined.
The lawmaker said that anti-cybercrime law should be enforced with its attendant penalties.
He called on relevant regulatory agencies to tighten their monitoring roles and bring to book cyber café operators who allow their facilities to be used for fraudulent and obscene activities.
Okon commended Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom for the free and compulsory education, saying that Ibiono Ibom State Constituency has benefited from the intervention in the education infrastructures under the inter-ministerial direct labour projects.
He congratulated the winners of the quiz competition on their deserved reward for hard work, dedication and commitment to their studies.
Earlier, Prof. George Ibe- Bassey, Chairman of the occasion, said that the sponsor of the competition, Barr Okon has not only developed human capacity but preparing the younger generations to become relevant in the society.
Bassey said that Barr Okon has brought dividend of democracy to the people of Ibiono Ibom. He enjoined all the Ibiono Ibom people to support Barr Okon second bids to the State House of Assembly.
Our Correspondent reports that in the Nursery school category, Victoria Umoh of Ideal Classic International Nursery and Primary, Ikot Ambang came 1st position while Favour Nyong of Presbyterian Nursery and primary school, Ibiaku came 2nd and Christopher Okon of Ideal Classic Int’l nursery and primary school, Ikot Ambang came 3rd position.
In the primary school category, the first position goes to Peace Umo of Holy Child School, Ikot Uneke while the second position goes to Emem Udo of Presbyterian primary school, osuk ntan and Abigail Anthony of primary ikot idaha came 3rd.
In the junior secondary school category, Saviour Bassey of Ibiono Community high school, Edem Urua came 1st while Abasifreke Bassey of Union secondary School, Ibiaku came 2nd and Rachael Essien of community Secondary school, Ibiaku came 3rd position.
Responding on behave of the awardees, Peace Umo thanked the organizers of the competition and said that the prize gift would spur her to take her academic serious.
