A mild drama ensued in the early hours of Wednesday (yesterday) at Nyong Essien Street, Uyo when a middle aged lady from Essien Udim and a young man, whose name was given as Anietie Effiom from Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of the state, apparently in his early thirties engaged in what many regarded as a show of shame. One report has it that the said lady is two years in Akwa Ibom State, this, she revealed to our reporter in a terse response. According to the lady, who did not want her name in print, she explained, in a rather subdued voice that the man, whose name she refused to reveal had carnal knowledge of her when she came in to town newly with her consent on the agreement that the man will pay her after the show.
Hear her: “this man thinks am a fool. She slept with me in a hotel at Utang Street some months ago when I came into Uyo newly and refused to pay me after we had agreed on a certain sum. Since then, he disappeared into thin air but today, luck ran out of him and I caught him trying to buy sewing materials from the same tailoring shop I went in. He must pay me today.’’ After having his way with me, he said he did not have money to pay and only gave me N200 for my transport back home. He promised to pay me up the following day but as am talking to you now, he has not given me a dime. When I did not hear from him again as he promised, I tried calling his line but he refused picking my calls. Later, his phone was not connecting again.’’
When asked how much was involved, she grumblingly said it was N5000 (five thousand naira). In a flash, a crowed soon gathered as both of them were shouting and raining curses on each other. The man in question denied ever knowing the lady. Several times, he made to beat the lady but the crowd could not let him. He was visibly angry with the lady and maintained innocence of the claims made by the dark skinned lady. He yelled at the top of his voice and kept denying vehemently of not knowing the lady. But the lady seemed so sure of her claims as she stood her ground stoutly.
While arguments ensued, with passersby and on lookers having a field day but utterly confused on what was really happening, the lady forcibly grabbed all the items the man bought and threatened not to return it until she gets her money. As if that was not enough, she made for Anietie’s pocket and made away with huge sums of money. Incensed, the man reached out to collect his money and the items but the lady resisted all attempts even as she spilled some of the money on the road with some on lookers falling over themselves to feast on the money.
On further investigation as to the real bone of contention, an onlooker who was right inside the same tailoring shop that the whole drama began, explained that the lady had picked some materials in the shop and approached Anietie to help her pay for them which was N 1, 700 and Anietie is said to have paid for her even without ever knowing the lady. As they made to leave the shop, the lady is said to have demanded the sum of N500 from the same guy for her fare back home. The guy, we learnt, said he was not with any other money. At this point, the lady started making claims that the she knows the guy, and that he shouldn’t pretend not knowing her.
The lady pressed on but things got out of hand when she started accusing the man of having slept with her in a certain hotel in Utang Street some months ago and left without paying her. Anietie was visibly alarmed at this point and, what he thought was a mere joke snowballed into a huge show of shame. Upon speaking with our reporter, Anietie denied knowing the lady let alone having any affair with her. He accused the girl of being a prostitute and a fraudster. But the lady stuck to her gun, insisting the man had an affair with her and refused paying her. She accused the man of lying, daring him to swear if he is not guilty of the crime. The man swore to not knowing her, but the lady could not just give in to that. The man later broke loose from the crowd and attempted to physically attack the lady but he was again, prevented. In the midst of the confusion, the lady was whisked away from the scene and never showed up as no one knew her whereabouts. The man was prevailed upon to forget the whole embarrassment and leave. He left without getting his money back except the items he purchased as the lady left with the money and was never seen again.
