APC: Between propaganda and reality
Change is the process of becoming different, according to a version of the English Dictionary. It implies a replacement and entails a form of modification, and alteration from the status quo. A people, after the monotonous experience with the status quo, can decide to opt for a change, a new experience, sometimes an experiment. A change can be for the better or for the worse. In the book of 1st Samuel, the children of Israel wanted a change, they badly wanted a different experience in their form of government. They wanted Monarchy in place of Theocracy, they wanted an earthly king who could lead them to war, a king they can see physically, as opposed to God who only spoke through the prophets.
Samuel, maybe out of jealously for losing his position as the de facto king since he was the only month piece of God warned the Israelites of the disadvantages of an earthly king which included forced labour, covetousness, and brutality to no avail, the Israelites had their way, the rest is history.
Nigerians from 1999 have been under democratic rule, the ruling party has been PDP prior to the last general elections which ushered in APC with a change mantra. The fall of PDP, the largest party in Africa is phenomenal, APC is still bathing in the euphoria of its victory that it has forgotten to commence the art of Governance.
The only active aspect of APC as a ruling party is their propaganda machinery, ably manned by the loquacious Lai Mohammed. In my earlier write up in this column, I equated this man who may be our next minister for information with squealer, a character in George Orwell’s Animal Farm who could turn black into white. Lai Mohammed is epitomizing squealer more and more by the day. His propaganda acuity is legendary. How do you explain his statement that after one month in office, Buhari has performed better than Jonathan’s six years in office? By this time, Buhari has not appointed anyone into office apart from Femi Adesina, he has not even made any significant pronouncement as per the direction of his government.
The resent outburst of the squealer is baffling, he praised his principal for winning the war against Boko Haram. Hear him ‘… the manner of attack shows that they are in disarray, for the first time methodological approach to fight terrorism. No other way to tackle Boko Haram, than how it is done now, good intelligent architecture, seeking regional cooperation…..’.
This is the highest insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians, as he was making these offensive remarks, Boko Haram were busy bombing, killing, destroying lives and properties with reckless abandon. Federal highway between Damaturu and Maiduguri was blocked with ease, suicide bombers are having a field day, entire communities are wiped out. Since may 29th when APC took over governance of the country, over 900 men, women, boys, girls, and infants have been killed by Boko Haram, Buhari has not issued any strong worded statement to condemn the carnage, yet someone is so insensitive to talk of methodological approach to fight terrorism. Suicide bombers, land mines are every way and somebody telling us that no other way to tackle Boko Haram than how it is done now. Must we play politics with human life in the name of change?
Goodluck Jonathan was accused of being clueless, but six weeks to the end of his tenure, he was able to exterminate Boko Haram from the shores of the country. In spite of the international conspiracy that denied him of arms, he was able to identify new friends who were willing to sell arms to him.
Nigerians wanted change, they are beginning to see change! Buhari cunningly wanted to spread Boko Haram like Ebola, he ordered the transfer of Boko Haram prisoners to Anambra and Lagos States, maybe he wanted later to fake a jail break and let loose the hounds in the south so that we too can have a share of the problem.
When people like us cried out that the leopard cannot hide its spots no matter the condition, some people didn’t take us seriously. The President has laid bare his fangs, we are returning to the era of arbitrary arrest of political enemies.
Sambo Dasuki, Obuah, other are to follow. The western press who brought Jonathan down have gone to sleep, they are not fighting against this return of dictatorship, very soon it maybe their turn!
Buhari is not someone who hides his intentions, he said he does not belong to any group, and belongs to everyone, but his recent appointment does not depict this stand, of all the appointments, 99% goes to the Moslem North. He does not owe anybody an apology, neither does he care about the reaction from any quarters, maybe this is the change Nigerians are in for, change from Federal character, change from equity, change from merit and change from the fabrics that hold us together as a nation.
Close to two months after inauguration, there is no government in place, only a sole administrator, the excuse is that he is clearing the mess left by the Jonathan administration. He says that we should be patient with him, we are patiently waiting, and everybody wants to know the direction this government will take.
We have started experience selective justice, and witch hunting. Sule Lamido who is seen as a possible presidential candidate in 2019 is hounded with his children, his achievements in infrastructure is second to none in his region, but he is under probe to rubbish him. Rauf Aregbesola who opened the treasury of Osun State for APC Presidential elections to the detriment of the state civil servants is a cult hero. Change! In River State, a court annulled the selection of local government chairmen havazardly put in place by Amaechi, the new governor appoints caretaker chairmen, the police sealed off the local government secretariats.
Every day we hear of the 16 years of PDP misrule, the rot left behind and corruption, when will APC realize that they are no more the opposition party but the ruling party?
When will they start ruling so that they deliver those lofty promises they made to the Nigerian people?
Nigerians are now politically wise they are watching and I know they will not hesitate to take a decisive decision in the appropriate time.
The Igbos of the south east are worse off, apart from an attempt to ‘infect’ them with Boko Haram, no position has so far been given to them. In the composition of the new service chiefs, it is logical to zone at least one of them to the zone, even civil defense corps which had an Igbo man as next in line have been given to a Hausa Moslem, and yet people are condemning Radio Biafra for its brand of propaganda. Why didn’t Buhari put Ogbonanya Onu, or Chris Ngige in his entourage to America? Are they not also apostles and financiers of change?
The whole world is waiting for the emergence of the ministerial list, we are told that most nominees failed corruption test. As the whole world is waiting and watching so is yours truly.
