Commissioner tasks youths on talent development

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Elder Aniekan S. Akpan has charged youths to embark on creativity, talent development and ventures that can make them useful members of the society. The Commissioner gave the charge penultimate Sunday when he inaugurated De Royal Brass Band at Ikot Oku Usung, Ukanafun L.G.A. He gave an assurance that the State Government would appreciate and promote good initiatives among the people of the State. To achieve these, the commissioner said it calls for persistence, courage and enterprise.

He thanked the director of De Royal Brass Band, Mr. Nsikan Ikoh for providing an opportunity and a platform for the youths to develop their musical skills.
Earlier in his speech, the director of De Royal Brass Band, Mr. Ikoh said he was propelled by the zeal to engage the youths positively so that they can have the springboard to learn and develop their talents in the area. Maintaining that the band would create employment for the youths, Mr. Ikoh disclosed that at least 15 youths have been engaged by the group. He described music as an inevitable way of praising God, citing psalms 150:3 “praise Him with the sound of trumpet, praise with him with psaltery and harp”. He explained that music has been an age-long therapy for the mentally sick, that David played harp for King Saul when he had mental disturbance and he became well, pointing out that in psychiatry, music has been use as recreational therapy to the mentally ill when combined with drugs.
Mr. Ikoh who is a also psychiatric care-giver and a maestro further explained that music, is a food of love as it can heal bitterness and insomnia.
