For the umpteenth time since his appointment, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Special Duties, Engr. Etido Inyang has yet again moved to unite political gladiators in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area with a view to consolidating and expanding the support base of the present administration. The latest round of such nobility was seen last weekend when the chairman and members of Ikot Ekpene Transition Committee visited him at his Uyo residence to affirm their loyalty to the present government led by Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Speaking during the visit, the Committee Chairman, Mr. Unyime Etim acknowledged the humane and humble disposition of Hon. Inyang and thanked him for always leaving his arms wide open to accommodate all persons and interests. On behalf of the committee members, he expressed profound gratitude to the state governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel for appointing Inyang as a member of his cabinet saying with his years of robust experience in the private and public sectors, the commissioner is apparently the best man for the job.
He noted that Inyang’s expertise and knack for perfection in projects execution are great assets which the state would be of immense benefits to the state as well as contribute to the success of the Udom led administration.
Hon. Etim who was full of praises for the commissioner noted his significant contributions and efforts towards the development of Ikot Ekpene local government in particular societal development in general, adding that he has never compromised his passion for the betterment of the community whether at the individual or collective level. The committee members expressed optimism that the elevation of Engr. Inyang would enhance growth in all spheres in the area.
On the purpose of their visit, Mr. Unyime informed the commissioner that they were at his residence to seek advice, solicit for his support, pledge their loyalty to present government as well as brief him on their achievements since inauguration. He listed their achievements so far to include; reintroduction of environmental sanitation, restoration of punctuality among staff in the local government administration, opening –up of blocked drainages, and road grading. He listed others to include setting-up of task force for Ikot Ekpene market sanitation and general sanitation in the local government area.
Speaking further, Mr. Unyime said that though they met the local government in total decay, his committee has within few weeks restored dignity back to the council under strenuous circumstances. He disclosed that Ikot Ekpene is currently indebted to banks to the tune of N51m (Fifty-one million naira), with months of unpaid salary to the staff. He solicited the commissioner’s assistance in alleviating the numerous challenges facing the council.
In his response, Commissioner Inyang thanked them for visiting and promised to assist at all times and in any way possible, saying it is not only incumbent on him, but that the terms of his social contract with the people makes it morally binding on him.
He thanked God for their elevation and the governor for deeming them fit to serve in the committee in different capacities. He tasked them to reciprocate the goodwill and confidence of the governor by being firm supporters of the present administration. While counseling them to be cautious in the discharge of their duties taking cognizance of the fact that the local government is a very delicate one, he drew their attention to the prevailing security challenges in the area which noted to be a recurring issue. He however assured that the governor has given directive towards bringing the situation under control as he had discussed the matter with him.
The commissioner tasked the committee administration to ensure that government prosperity in the area is protected at all times as Governor Udom Emmanuel has reduced their workload by demanding that they focus on environmental sanitation without embarking on major projects. He intimated them that land availability is a core requirement in attracting investors especially in an era when the main focus of government is industrialization, adding that there should be strategic initiatives in that direction as the state begins to witness influx of investors.
Alongside the chairman were Precious Udoh, the committee secretary, James Uko, Uko Michael, Imo Udo, Charles Inyang, Umoh Assiak, Abigail Akpan and Lucy Umoh.
