Akwa Ibom State government has donated 100 new laptops to the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, in fulfillment of its promise made to the union, last year.

The laptops, which are HP products, were presented to journalists by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, during a press briefing in Uyo to mark the end of 2014 working year.

Describing Governor Godswill Akpabio as a promise keeper, the Commissioner said the donation was part of the State government's commitment to enhancing the welfare and improve working conditions for media professionals.

"These are meant to equip you for better performance of your duties. I, therefore, have the honour of handing over 100 laptop computers to the NUJ, for distribution to its members. I am sure you still remember that only last week, we handed over 1000 units of Go TV decoders to the Union. It is my happiness that the Akpabio administration, apart from creating enabling environment for the practice of journalism, has carried members along in the scheme of things." Mr. Umanah said.

He advised beneficiaries to make judicious use of the computers, saying "As we savour the benevolence of our purposeful and visionary leader, and make merry together, I urge you all continue to do your best to support the government."

On the 2015 general election, the Commissioner tasked journalists on professionalism. "The task of electing new leadership for our State is one that we cannot toy with. Therefore, let us with professional vigour and patriotic zeal, promote candidates that have the capacity and political will to make the music of uncommon transformation continue in our dear State."

He used the occasion to highlight some of the achievements of the present administration in the State, including the construction of the 30,000-capacity Akwa Ibom International Stadium; free and compulsory education programme; training and financial empowerment of more than 4,000 youths and 4,500 women in agriculture; as the construction of      Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort; and Ibom Tropicana Entertainment Centre.

Receiving the laptop computers on behalf of the journalists, the State NUJ Chairman, Elder Patrick Albert, expressed appreciation to Governor Godswill Akpabio for his commitment to improving the working conditions for media workers in the State.

He expressed confidence that the working relationship between the union and the State government will be more fruitful in 2015 and beyond.
