Two of Akwa Ibom’s frontline comedians, James Emmanuel - Sir James and Ubong Ukutt - Mc Spinosky have in a joint summon, are suing one Mr. Israel Goodson Bassey of Alpha Recodz for alleged “Injury to Reputation”.
In a statement by the legal team to the comedy acts, Kanu G. Agabi (SAN) & Associates, it read:
Our clients have informed us that on the 27th of December, 2014, you (Isreal Goodson) organized an event christened ‘Helnoe Night of Stars’ at Helnoe Suits, No 137 Old Ring road off Atiku Abubakar Avenue Uyo. At the event, you scheduled our clients to anchor the comedy segment without their consent first sought and had. Irrespective of this, you gave the event large scale publicity through the print and electronic media using amongst others, our clients names.
Their fans most of whom accused them of deliberately staying away from the event, expressed deep shock and utter disappointment at our clients’ failure to have performed that night. Our clients have therefore been embarrassed and have had their integrity dragged into the mud and reputation tarnished. As you are well aware, our clients’ greatest fount of patronage and support base, stems from the goodwill they enjoy from their fans.
Our clients who are ace comedians and comperes per excellence have been mortified by you and have suffered severe pecuniary loses arises there from.
The statement further states:
We have it in good authority that you collected a handsome sum from your sponsor using the name of our clients.
We have our clients mandate to demand and we demand the following;
1. Payment of the sum if Two Hundred Thousand (N 200, 000.00) Naira damages to Sir James.
2. Payment of the sum if Two Hundred Thousand (N 200, 000.00) Naira damages to Mc Spinosky.
3. That henceforth, anytime you require their services, their consent must first be sought and had.
Though Mr. Israel Goodson Bassey of Alpha Recodz is yet to respond and if he doesn’t yield to the demands of the comedians, will be charged to court.
