Group blasts commissioner on zoning in Ibiono Ibom

A group of professionals and businessmen from Ibiono Ibom-Network for democracy and development has condemned the purported attempt by the commissioner for rural development, Engr. Ignatius Edet to unilaterally zone the chairmanship and House of Assembly positions in Ibiono Ibom without regards to the collective desire of the Ibiono Ibom people. Arising from an emergency meeting yesterday, in Uyo,the chairman of the group, Engr. Ekanem Ofonime observed with dismay the undemocratic action of the commissioner which he noted was capable of generating bad blood among peace loving and well meaning Ibiono Ibom people.

The group condemned the commissioner’s  action as, “an act of arrogance and usurpation of powers” , and called on well meaning people of Ibiono Ibom and the public to jettison such,  ”Undemocratic act by a power drunk and self seeking individual who was yet to give account of his stewardship to the Ibiono Ibom people since his appointment as a commissioner”.

The group noted with satisfaction the assurance from the national leadership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP that the process of selecting its flag-bearers for the 2015 elections would be credible, fair and democratic, and called on qualified indigenes of Ibiono Ibom interested in seeking political offices on the platform of any political party to, “come out and present themselves to the people for assessment”.

The group advised elected and appointed office holders from Ibiono Ibom to use their positions for the betterment of the people, rather than cause disaffection and disharmony in the area. The group observed that the commissioner who had served  two terms of eight years as a lawmaker did not find it “appropriate and convenience” to zone  political offices during his tenure in 2003-2011, and wondered why it has become necessary for him to contemplate zoning the office of the House of the Assembly to Ibiono North.

“why has it become necessary for him to contemplate zoning the office of the House of Assembly to Ibiono Ibom North, whereas he himself from Ibiono Ibom Southern  had enjoyed two terms in the House  of Assembly, and even attempted a third-term”, and for “peace, unity, progress and development to continue in Ibiono Ibom, the incumbent member in the House of Assembly who is from Ibiono Ibom Western should be allowed a second term, not necessarily that he’s from Ibiono Ibom Western, but, because he has represented the people of Ibiono Ibom effectively and efficiently and has shown commitment to the peace and development of Ibiono Ibom”.

In another development, the coordinator of Ibiono Ibom Students’ support network, Samuel Francis has lauded the lawmaker representing Ibiono Ibom in the state House of Assembly, Barrister Ime Okon for heeding the call of the people to seek re-election in the 2015 elections. The coordinator gave his commendation when Okon picked the PDP nomination for the House of Assembly position.  He maintained that Ibiono Ibom students were unanimously satisfied with Okon’s representation so far, especially  his concern for the educational development of Ibiono Ibom youth, which he has consistently since 2012 been  providing scholarship and welfare assistance to indigent Ibiono Ibom students in various institutions of higher learning.
