Bakassi returnees, under the auspices of the Association of Internally-Displaced Persons in Akwa Ibom State, have endorsed the immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Nsima Ekere, for the 2015 gubernatorial race.
The returnees, who made the endorsement on Saturday during a solidarity visit to Mr Ekere, hinged it on the former Deputy Governor’s humanitarian concern for them especially during his tenure in office.
The National Coordinator of the association, Prince Aston-Joseph Inyang, described Mr. Ekere as a philanthropist and a man of integrity who loved peace, unity and the underprivileged.
He recalled that Mr. Ekere as Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in 2011 ensured that the United Nations Mixed Commission met with the returnees on their plight.
Prince Inyang declared their intention to partner with the leading PDP governorship aspirant and appealed to him to integrate them in his group.
Responding, Mr. Ekere thanked the Bakassi returnees for the endorsement and assured them that he will look into their plight as soon as he assumed office as Governor next year.
He recalled that as Deputy Governor and SEMA Chairman, he got the government to respond to the suffering of the Bakassi returnees by establishing three camps to accommodate some and reunite others with their families.
The highpoint of the visit was the handing over of the Nigerian flag by the returnees to Mr. Ekere who went ahead to hoist it at the campaign secretariat located along Edet Akpan Avenue, Uyo.
