The Special Adviser, Bureau of Political and Legislative Affairs and Water Resources, Rt Hon. Barrister Ekong Sampson has described the recent resurgence of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a rebirth, and good news for Nigeria’s democracy.
Barrister Sampson made the submission during a chat with newsmen while responding to questions on the implications of the non elective National convention of the party which was held at the Eagles Square, Abuja on Saturday, 12th August 2017.
Barrister Sampson said, PDP has learnt a lot from the adversity the party has gone through in the last two years, since losing the Presidential elections in 2015.
Giving factors responsible for the sudden rise of the PDP, Sampson argued that, the uncertainty of of the time and circumstances the nation is currently witnessing has also caused Nigerians to demonstrate faith in PDP, stressing that, the party will do well to rebuild and work to replace the All Progressives Congress, APC, which he maintains has so far failed the nation, come 2019.
According to him, Akwa Ibom State will remain a PDP stronghold for the foreseeable future as the party is firmly on ground and Akwa ibom people believe in the party.
Barrister Sampson posited that, the superior performance of Governor Udom Emmanuel has helped to tell the PDP story, as he has demonstrated clear capcity for leadership, and has greatly improved the infrastructiure in the State. The Political Adviser to Governor Emmanuel insisted that, the PDP enjoys massive followership in the state which is boosted by Governor Udom Emmanuel’s sterling performance.
Barrister Sampson said the large crowd of PDP members from other states of the federation that celebrated Governor Udom Emmanuel when he showed up at the Eagles Square venue of the non elective National convention, is proof that, he is becoming a rallying point in the party, not only in Akwa Ibom State, but nationally.
He said the achievements of Governor Udom Emmanuel advertises the fact that, the PDP is the best for the state in 2019.
Sampson expressed confidence that, the good people of Akwa Ibom State in their overwhelming majority, will reelect Governor Udom Emmanuel in 2019 for a second term in office, so he can complete his vision for sustainable development in the state.
On why PDP lost the Presidential election in 2015, Barrister Sampson explained that, the party wasted so much effort in the party primaries, becoming too fractured and exhausted to present a formidable united front in the said election.
He however expressed optimism that, the PDP will bounce back and commended the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee of the PDP for being proactive in its quest to reposition the party.
