Ikot Abasi Chairmanship: Ukpum Ete rejects imposition

As the forthcoming local government elections begins to gather momentum, the peoples of Ukpum Ete Clan in Ikot Abasi, whose tenure it is, to produce the next executive chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government, have rejected in its entirety, imposition of candidate in any form on them, either through anointment or consensus.

Rising from a well attended meeting of Ukpum Ete PDP Stakeholder’s Forum on Tuesday, at the popular Harvest Moon Hotel, they appreciated Governor Udom Emmanuel and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, under Mr. Paul Ekpo, for adhering to the principle of zoning and rotation of power, which they described as a panacea for political cohesion and stability in the Local Government.

They poured encomiums and lavished praises upon Gov. Udom Emmanuel, for his wisdom by rotating power to the areas where the zoning favoured. Again they re-affirmed their loyalty to the PDP and pledged to return him for a second term in 2019.

However, the PDP stakeholders, vowed in strong terms, to reject with their last drop of blood, any form of imposition of anybody on them as the system, from previous experiences, breeds irresponsibility, recklessness and political allegiance to the godfather, rather than the people.

They identified the causes of the leadership crisis and socio-economic backwardness in the area as imposition of unpopular candidates who, by training, experience and passion, are not qualified to occupy sensitive public offices.

The PDP stakeholders appealed strongly to the leadership of the party and the State Governor by extension, to ensure that the constitution of the party is strictly followed in letter and in spirit, in electing the next chairman of Ikot Local Government. They insist they must choose their chairman this time in order to avoid a repeat of bad history.

The meeting attracted over a hundred PDP members and officers. Twelve chairmanship aspirants attended the August meeting.

Prominent among the stakeholders were the Chairman of the Forum and a former supervisor for education in Ikot Abasi Local Government Council, Hon. Friday Ekanem (ward I) Mr. Segun Umoetuk (ward II), Chief Udo Mbat Usen (ward II) Pastor Akpan Umo Etuk (ward II) John Obot Owoh (ward II) Ikot Abasi Chapter Youth Leader of the PDP Cdr. Udofia Davies (ward I), Immediate past Women Leader of the PDP Iniobong Udosen (ward II) youths and PDP faithful from Ukpum Ete Clan.
