Why Gov. Udom Emmanuel appointed Elders into Boards, Commissions - PDP Spokesman

Based on complaints making the rounds that the State Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel prefer elders to be in charge of Boards and Commissions against youths’ interests who supported and voted for him to emerge as governor, the State Chapter of the PDP has given substantial acumen for doling out such appointments to retired civil servants and other senior citizens.

Speaking with Journalists shortly after an interactive session with Chairmen and members of Boards and Commissions with the State exco of the party led by Mr. Paul Ekpo at the party secretariat, Uyo, the State Publicity Secretary, Barr. Ini Ememobong, emphasized that the Boards are basically advisory bodies that requires experience and patience.

“When you look at an advisory capacity, you will best not choose young active person in advisory capacity. You will rather have an MD/CEO who is young. Check board chairmen of Zenith Bank, UBA, First Bank etc., they are all elderly and experienced people but you have younger elements as executive directors, directors etc. We have younger generations as aides to commissioners, governors and also in executive positions. When the younger ones are doing what they need to do and you have this experience people on the board, you have a merger of raw energy with experience.

“When you take the experience of people like Sir Dr. Val Attah, Prof. Maria Ikorok, former Minister of the Federal Republic, Akon Eyakenyi of course, the Rector is a younger person compare to the former Minister but that is an executive position. So you discover that the board positions are basically advisory. Can you spot the combination made in the civil service commission where you are bringing former permanent secretary, former head of civil service, head of transition committee that transited the governor and he is brought back as chairman civil service commission. so, those positions required cognate experience because the executive is always ready and available,” he explained.

Speaking further, the PDP Spokesperson insisted, “Young people are not imbued with a lot of patient to execute things. Even in your newspaper houses and various media, you have editor-in-chief as a young person but the editorial board has most older person as chairman. The chairman of the board is to put you permanently on check because experience and age are not sole determinant but they played a lot of role in those areas. Take it from me, the governor is a strategic person, he does not do things off the hook and he does not do things without reasoning.

“Let us look at the House of Assembly Commission, an elderly man is the chairman but the Speaker is a younger person. So, you find energy, intellect meeting with age and experience. The younger people have a great role in governance”
