Non-teaching staff of Federal Science & Technical College, Uyo, on Friday protested over non-payment of their Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for some months now.
The non-teaching staff which took to the street of Ukana Offot where the college is situated blocked the gate of the college as early as 7a.m as well as other staff of the college from entering the school compound. The non-teaching staff, numbering over 50, protested as well as chanting with placard’s inscriptions, “Principal settle your house before charity, no DTA no party, no payment of death benefits to our late colleagues families no party, principal who buy gift items for her friends is corrupt, DTA is a right not a privilege, if there is money for DTA then forget about party, we no go gree pay our DTA” among others.
Addressing journalists, the Chairman of Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Comrade Iboro Umoren said they decided to embark on a peaceful protest after they had presented their demands to the principal and she refused to dialogue with them.
Comrade Iboro Umoren, who is a non-teaching staff of Federal Science & Technical College, said their demands included; payment of death benefits to the families of some of the non-teaching staff of the college who died recently in the course of discharging their duties and over 100 staff went for promotion courses in different categories and up till date the principal has refused to pay them their Duty Tour Allowance (DTA).
Other reasons for their protest, Umoren said collecting illegal fees from parents and students as well as shot-charging of 2.000 each from all the students for painting of the college and till date, painting has not been done, among other vital issues.
According to the Chairman, “We are not happy at all. The principal has to look into our plights. Why we did this protest today is that she has bought so many items of which President Buhari has warned that no items or souvenirs should be bought in any occasion, but our principal has bought Television set, washing machines, and other gifts items to be presented to her friends and the party was about holding today so we decided to disrupt the party.” he noted.
Comrade Iboro Umoren further hinted that the principal, Ms. Pauli O. Etomaihe has been operating in the college with impunity and has refused to listen to the advice or contribution of other staff in the college. He disclosed that non-teaching staff have tried all possible ways to get their DTA paid, but all efforts proved abortive with the principal giving them excuses that she owes nobody explanation. He called on the transfer of the principal, saying that staff are tired of the administration lapses of the principal. However, efforts to speak with the principal, Ms. Pauli O. Etomaihe was not successful as the principal was not around to speak with journalists.
