Ex-Eaglets, 11 Academies for Tournament in A’Ibom

Organisers of the Ultimate Cup Championship in Uyo have released list of 11 teams invited for the tournament expected to be watched by representatives of Deportivo Alaves, Sporting Lisbon , Braga, Victoria Setubal, Udinese among others.

According to the LOC press statement, the teams were carefully selected based on previous performances monitored by top coaches across the country.

The statement further explained that this was in line with the charge given by one of their foreign partner clubs for the tournament, Depotivo Alaves, a Spanish La Liga side.

“It is a unique tournament and the foreign club representatives are coming for observation. They love Nigeria players and really want to see their developmental programmes, hence we recognized only properly structured academies with solid facilities and good training programme for the tourney,” the statement signed by Dr David Thompson, the coordinator stated.


The Alaves top staff for the event Lopez Raul in a telephone conversation said he was looking forward to the tournament which he described as an opportunity to study the country’s youth football considering stars, who have emerged from the system in the past years.

“Nigeria is a super power in youth football that the main motivation, it’s good to witness grassroots football there, and see how these raw talents evolved,” Raul added.

The 11 teams listed for the five days tourney are Kingdom football club- Uyo, United Flying Eagles, Abuja, Dream Together Academy, Cotonou, Benin Republic, Donastar Academy, Aba, Diadem football club, and NCI Ambassadors.

Others include, Palace United - Ikono, Ituen Academy F.C - Itu,Greater Solution - Ibesikpo, Sharp Shooters FC and Miracle Soccer Academy.

Dr. Thompson further explained that United Flying Eagles are made up of Players drawn from the National U20 team of the Chile 2015 World Cup fame and the current team, who want to use the tournament to reunite with their colleagues during the off season.

Chukwudi Agor, who scored at the U17 World Cup in Chile is to be the captain of United Eagles.
