Various cult groups and other criminal activities have taken over
one of the popular private polytechnics in Akwa Ibom State, Heritage
Polytechnic, Ikot Udota, Eket. THE INK understands.
Information contained in a speech made by the founder of the
polytechnic, Dr. Emmanuel Ekott, during the last matriculation ceremony of the
institution revealed that various cult groups such as KKK, Vikings, Vigeen,
White Angels, Black Brassiere, Buccaneers, Black Axe among others have been
identified in the polytechnic.
In his address during the 2016 matriculation ceremony of the
polytechnic, the Founder and Chairman, Governing Council of the Polytechnic,
Dr. Emmanuel Ekott confirmed saying ‘’cult group like White Angels, Buccaneers,
KKK, Vikings, and Black Axe have been identified and we shall deal with the
situation as it demands’’.
The Founder also added that some spots within the polytechnic
community such as Heritage Park, Ikot Udota has been of very serious concern
saying ‘’the spot is now a notorious place of armed robbery, cultism, rape
centres and other forms of vices both at day time and at night’’.
The situation of cultism and criminal activities is so worrisome
that the management of the institution is considering plans to embark on a
compulsory residency for all her students. In line with the above, the founder
also stated that ‘’where we do not have the cooperation from the village, we
will be forced to reduce our students population and order all students to live
within the campus.’’
Investigations also revealed that other criminal activities such
as raping, bullying, examination malpractices, sex scandals, gayism, prostitution;
lesbianism and even ritualism and extortion among others have become obvious
activities in the polytechnic in recent times.
It could be recalled that some students were recently expelled
from the polytechnic for involvement in various cult related activities. The
expelled students, according to the release signed by the Rector of the
Polytechnic, Elder Udoyiu Udoyiu and made public cut across National and Higher
National Diploma Students from Public Administration, Electrical/Electronic
Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration and Marketing, and Mass
Communication Departments of the institution
