Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has called on Nigerians to pray for divine intervention to rescue the Nation from further hardship as the economy keeps dwindling. This, the Governor said is sequel to the persistent decline in the price of Crude Oil as well as devaluation of Naira which exchange rate stands at three hundred and seven Naira to a Dollar. The Governor made the call during the January Edition of Government House Prayer Meeting held at Latter House Chapel, Governor’s Lodge, Uyo.
He said the decline economy has brought about short fall in the financial allocation to the States and that the unfortunate development has has made it difficult for States to meet it obligations to it work force as well as embarking on developmental projects. “But not for ingenuity on fiscal appropriation and management of resources, it would have been difficult to meet expectations in handling programmes and projects in the state “ He stated.
He said Work will soon resume at various road construction sites as contractors have returned from Christmas holiday and announced plans to launch Grassroot Peasant Multipurpose Cocoa Scheme saying that Consultants from Canada and Switzerland have arrived the state to educate the farmers on Cocoa cultivation and that Consumer Cooperative is to be established to enable the improved seedlings be sold at International Market price as a way of encouraging the farmers.
Earlier in an homily, Reverend Joseph Eton of the Presbyterian Church admonished that God sustains the people, State and government by his special grace to enable all witness the new year.
The Clergy who preached on the theme “Grace for greater things than these,” expressed appreciation to God for the choice of Governor Emmanuel whom he said is determined to create opportunities for wealth to abound in the state even in the face of the dwindling resources and prayed God to bless the Udom’s administration.
At the Prayer Meeting which featured praises and prayers, Governor Emmanuel read the first Bible portion from John 1 verse 43 to 51 as the Deputy Governor, Mr Mosses Ekpo, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Onofiok Luke, Members of the State Executive Council, Permanent Secretaries and Political Stakeholders were in attendance.
