State Govt angry over non remittance of counterpart funds

Akwa Ibom State Government has expressed displeasure over the non remittance of its counterpart revenue by some public Agencies operating in the State, describing the trend as inimical to sustainable development of the State.

The Commissioner for Finance, Mr Akan Okon made the declaration when he met with Management of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and top officers of Federal Road Safety Corp(FRSC) at the conference Room of the Ministry ,within the week.

The Commissioner who termed as worrisome , failure on the parts of some of these Agencies to comply with Fiscal Responsibility Act which stipulates  remittance of certain percentage of their Internally Generated Revenue to the State’s Consolidated Revenue Funds said, such violation has affected the projection of the state Government.


He however maintained that despite these  setbacks, Government remains resolute in its drive to continually explore ways to expand its horizon in IGR,in order to meet its obligations to the people,calling on those Agencies to make proactive efforts to align with the laws of the land so as to promote democratic goals.

On his part, the FRSC Sector Commander,Engr. M.R Yerima, appreciated the Finance Commissioner for the initiative of interfacing with them which he said has created a platform for clarification of issues.

Engr. Yerima who affirmed the Corp ‘s  commitment to keeping faith with the set rules and regulations however regretted that their inability to remit Akwa Ibom revenue to its coffers is based on delay in issuance of  password from their Head office to enable IRS to access the Account. He assured that they are working on modalities to normalize the situation and therefore solicited understanding and patience in this regards.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner  for Finance,Mr Akan Okon has lauded the Federal Government’s innovation of creating a database for Taxpayers through the biometric capturing of  Taxable adults and subsequent issuance of unique identification number.

The Commissioner made the commendation when he played host to  the TIN crew who were at the state Ministry of Finance to capture the Staff.

Mr Okon acknowledged that enormous benefits of TIN mechanism which according to him will not only harmonize taxpayers identification,but will also address inefficiency in tax administration, tax compliance and other practices which had generated revenue leakages in the country.

He advocated for more awareness on the TIN device to ensure massive participation.
The Commissioner who was captured alongside other staff of the Ministry was later presented with his TIN identity card.
