Security expert calls for formation of vigilante groups in Eket

BY ASSAM ABIA

Following the upsurge of criminal activities in Eket in recent times, the Village Chairman of Okopedi Community in Eket Local Government Area, Obong Peter Edemumoh has called for full implementation of community policing strategy via formation of vigilante groups in the oil city.  Obong Edemumoh, a retired police officer and an expert in security matters made the call on Sunday in reaction to robbery attack Friday on resident of Mkpok in Eket.

“Community policing is already in existence in Nigeria but not fully practicaliseddue to the level of synergy between the Police Force and the citizenry but I think it has become expedient to fine-tune the policy in some areas like Akwa Ibom and Eket in particular”, Obong Peter said.
He however noted that the formation of vigilante groups has with it some negative effect if criminals infiltrate the ranks of members, adding that members of the group should be scrutinized.
ObongEdemumoh commended the efforts of the Nigerian Police in Eket for being proactive in curbing criminality in the area, adding that crime prevention should be every body’s business as the police alone cannot curb crime in any community.
On electricity, the village Chairman commended the efforts of the Power Company which has seen to steady increase in Power output in Eket in particular but regretted that electricity bills are so high.
He called on the regulatory body to intervene and see to it that pre-paid metres be made available to consumers at a very affordable prize.
“When I approached the Power Holding Company here in Eket for prepaid metre, I was asked to come and pay N60,000 for a three face metre and N30,000 for a single face, it’s a ploy to allow the status –quo remain”, Edemumoh said.
