The Special Adviser to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Political and Legislative Affairs, Rt. Hon. Anietie Etuk has clarified the vexed issue of the State Government’s proposed new tax regime. The Nsit Ibom born former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly stated this when he interacted with our reporter over the weekend.

He explained that contrary to widely held opinion that the Governor is insensitive to workers’ welfare, the former Lawmaker remarked that Governor Udom Emmanuel is aware of the hard times and is committed to ensuring the best working conditions for workers.
“The whole thing is that if your tax is N5, 000, the rebate is just 50 percent, you’ll pay N2, 500. The Governor is conscious of the fact that times are difficult and it is important that you introduce something that will ameliorate the sufferings of the people. The Governor feels the pulse of the people and will not do anything that will further put the people in financial stress.’’
He noted that the tax is in order, adding that some people misunderstood Government’s intention. He stressed that Governor Udom Emmanuel has the interest of workers at heart and therefore called on workers and indeed the mass of the people of the state to rally round the current administration for greater development of the state.
“The 50 percent deduction is on the Personal Income Tax (PIT) of workers and not from their salary. That is the true situation of things and people should be properly guided.’’ He noted.
