School of Health Technology, Etinan may be shut down

BY NSEOBONG DAVID

The Akwa Ibom State Government has threatened to shut down the School of Health Technology, Etinan by Wednesday, 14th October, 2015 if the students do not desist from their planned protest to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere and academic activities in the school. This was disclosed during a chat with pressmen by Dr. Dominic Ukpong, the State Commissioner for Health in his office yesterday. Dr. Ukpong expressed displeasure with the planned protest by the students of the institution, describing it as sabotage and gross disobedience to the appeal made by the State Government to address several challenges confronting the school.

It could be recalled that the students of the School of Health Technology, Etinan embarked on a peaceful demonstration on last Thursday, protesting lack of facilities, expensive school fees and also demanded for full control of the school bus and generator, among others.
According to Dr. Ukpong, the State Government has promised to look into the demands of the students with a view to attending to their needs.  But he expressed disappointment that in spite of government’s appeal, the students had insisted to take the protest to the State House of Assembly, planning to disrupt the final exams expected to commence on Monday, 19th October, 2015, which according to the commissioner is insurbordination and disrespect to the law; warning the students, in their own interest, to refrain from the planned protest, and to maintain peace as government was finding solutions to their needs.
