Vincent Enyeama: When the ovation is still high

Vincent Enyeama: When the ovation is still high
BY  UBONG  INYANG

Gone are the days when football  evolved around loyalty. Soccer today has taken a new dimension which has seen money pumped into it and it has been yielding results. Success in football can be bought with money and that is why Arsene Wenger once accused Chelsea of “financial doping” when the blues were on a spending spree which eventually brought them the premier league crown in 2005 after 50 years of waiting.

The concept of loyalty died long ago except for a chosen few who chose to stick and abide by the principle of loyalty with their clubs and national teams. With the nature of today’s game, transition should not also be sacrificed on the altar of loyalty. Transition is paramount not only in football but in our everyday activities because those who have seen and done it all should pave the way for the future breeds.

Vincent Enyeama: As Oliseh begins the lonely walk along the slope
By Amos Etuk

It happened without any fore sight but the signs were there  though it was waved aside as something that would not brew up to its recent climax, but the current crisis in the senior national team of Nigeria, the Super Eagles has come too early in the tenure of Sunday Oliseh who has failed to learn from history and the travails of his predecessors.

When Amaju Pinnick, the Nigeria Football federation President finally had the courage to boot out Stephen Keshi as the Eagles Manager, the choice of Sunday Oliseh was the obvious as football administrators and stakeholders for once agreed that there was the need to be united in the change at that level and give Oliseh the utmost support to succeed.
The choice was heralded by all including yours sincerely who has been a firm supporter of the Belgium based coach going by his in depth analysis of football and intellectual content he was bringing to the team and it was expected that the new team would be the next step of getting the country to be among Africa’s best in the nearest future.

Ministerial Screening: An analysis so far

BY C.V.AKUTA

This is a personal analysis of the  Senate Ministerial screening of Tuesday,13th October and Wednesday, 14th October 2015. Firstly, most (if not all) of the ministerial nominees so far, are sound and outstanding. Impressive curriculum vitae. Permit me to mention few of the remarkable ones, Fayemi, Fashola, Kachikwu, and Kemi. Lai Mohammed (APC Publicity Secretary), made the Senators laugh most. Surprisingly, he was not asked any questions, rather to bow and go. Ngige and few ex Senators were also asked to take a bow and go.

Need to tame unethical Journalism by Idris Mabadeje

BY IDRIS MABADEJE

It is for the purpose of guiding individual members of different professions that codes of ethics are formulated to stipulate acceptable standards of behaviour, below which members are deemed to have erred. Professionals in every field of endeavour, by virtue of their training, are assumed to be capable of making judgements and applying acquired skills to arrive at informed decisions while dealing with their clients.
In journalism, dealing with a mass clientele that requires timely, and credible information to make socio-political and economic decisions, especially in a democracy, imposes a huge responsibility on practitioners to come across at all times, as dependable allies in the tasks of human development and nation-building.
Across many nations of the world, codes of ethics for journalists otherwise known as canons of journalism, share common principles of truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability in news gathering and dissemination.

Tony Akan: A unifying force in Uruan LG by Kufre Etuk

Tony Akan
BY KUFRE ETUK

In a political clime like Nigeria where elected officers and political office holders often make themselves demi-gods to their subjects, it will be totally unthinkable for anybody to believe that there could be a politician, in this part of the country, who sees fame and extravagant life style as unnecessary to his calling. Such politician could be said to be a pretender whose real character is masked within the frontier of his political interest with the aim of currying supports from his people to further his political course. But when such life style is consistent with the person in question for many years, such can be said to be his character. Therefore, show me a politician who snubs his supporters after election and I will show you a man who has turned his house into human friendly centre. A man who spends every day of his existence listening to his people and assisting them in all human possible ways. A politician who takes everybody around him as his sibling and deny no one his right. A peaceful gentleman who believes that promotion comes from God, and as such, whoever God chooses to lead him and his people deserves their support. Show me the people’s leader, pathfinder, father to the poor, students-friendly captain, and I will tell you that Rt. Hon. Tony Akan is the one.

Udo Udoma: The trouble(s) of a goldfish

Udoma
BY UBONG SAMPSON

I envisage this to be one of the easiest of all jobs I have done so far in the writing business. Not that the content is expected to be any less than the lots, but merely that I have as a subject matter, a man whose story is to the people as familiar as the biblical story of Christ’s birth and crucifixion is to christians. In essence, the foregoing will be discussing a man whose records is already known to all. The story of Late Justice Egbert Udo Udoma is one I was privileged to be familiar with at a tender age. Then as an indigene of Ikot Abasi before the creation of Mkpat Enin, the renowned legal legend hard escaped any topic of discuss my dad had

Season of blackmail by Kenneth Jude

Gov. Udom
These are unusual times. It’s a season where politics has assumed a horrendous dimension. Everything and anything are just happening with dizzying speed. Talk about blackmail and laying claim to another’s intellectual property and you won’t be further from true state of things. No institution appears safe in this potpourri of happenstances.  As the state Government went to town with the dakkada initiative, its opponents laid an ominous ambush. While the Udom Emmanuel led administration saw the catchword from a standpoint of rebirth and regeneration in all strata of life, the opposition All Progressives Congress turned the buzz word on its head. They simply asked the Governor to make haste to vacate his seat for Umana Okon Umana who is seeking for the nullification of Udom’s April 11 victory at the polls. As if that was not enough, those who have sworn by their breathe never to recognise Deacon Udom Emmanuel as Governor said the dakkada phrase is another ploy to set off another round of pilfering spree as was the trademark of the immediate past administration.

Aniefiok in a shrine

The word “every” has the same meaning as: all, each, full, total, entire, complete, all possible. It is used to say how often something happens or is done. The word is used with singular nouns to refer to all the members of a group of things or people – every single, everyone, every individual, one and all, all and sundry, the whole world.
Hi! Dear reader, do you believe that God created every thing? If you do, then it means you and I are among the created things. By the way, are you a good or a bad thing? Permit my apparent rudeness, crudeness, indecency or vulgarity. But, whether you are a living thing or a non-living thing, you are a thing. Yes, whether you join a rat race or not doesn’t change you from remaining a rat. Mr./Mrs. Something, are you righteous or evil? Whatever you claim you are or wherever you place yourself, you are a creature of the Uncreator Creator and, as Wale Adenuga describes you, you are only “a pencil in the hand of the Creator”. Know it, dear reader, that the men and women mentioned in the Bible, in the kuran or any Holy Writ, cum those outside, are but as you are. We are all God’s handiwork or handicraft. He made a wonderful construction of us (the men) then, with self-congratulations, He worked extra time using our ribs to form (not create) women. That’s why you see women so beautiful, sweet and tender. A round of applause for our great God, oh – Jare!

Udoma Udo Udoma: Buhari’s anniversary gift to Nigerians by Thompson Ekpo

Udoma
There is a maxim which maintains that a king is known by the minister he appoints. A King who is unserious with the ideological contents of his cabinet will correspondingly appoint unserious people in the business of governance into his office. In the other hand, a serious king with the business of governance will be diligent in forming his cabinet without undue interference. It is the above maxim that really informed president Buhari’s diligence in constituting his cabinet and not necessarily slowness insinuated in some quarters. Perhaps, negative political behaviors of some past political office holders might also account for his carefulness.
With the level of information technology in advanced countries, it is rather easy to carry out research into the antecedents of potential political appointees. This is so because the record is always readily available. This apart, people in developed democracies have the courage to willingly give out information for or against political gladiators no matter the immediate gain or loss.

Poverty: Nigeria’s timeless challenge by Priscilla Christopher

Activities for Nigeria’s 55th anniversary had longed commenced; what was probably left is the dawn of this epochal day and here we are. Nigeria is celebrating another year of robust economic, infrastructural, social developments, and other strides it has recorded all the way. Without mincing words, Nigeria has truly come of age in terms of development in all sectors of its economy. There have been tremendous changes in the pattern of operation thus, leading to a sharp contrast between the ancient pattern of things and what is obtainable today. This is seen in the maturity showcased and enlightenment garnered by leaders as the years go by.

UDOMA: BUHARI’S GREAT CHOICE

UDOMA: BUHARI’S GREAT CHOICE

By Nsibiet John

The news broke out that the nation’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has jettisoned all pressures from politicians and pressure groups from Akwa Ibom and then moved ahead to nominate Senator Udoma Udo Udoma into his cabinet as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in a manner that left many a Nigerian with great sighs of excitement.

It is interesting and commendable that Mr. President made this appointment. It is to a right thinking person one appointment that has restored the deeply wounded confidence of the people on the President. It was least expected that Udoma will return to the service of the nation in the capacity he is being linked to as it is.

Given this nomination of Udoma Udo Udoma by Buhari into the Federal Executive council, it appears that the change the Presidency talked about will be a real change. It looks like this era of change will bring positive changes.

Akwa Ibom people are happy with the President owing to this appointment, the Niger Delta Region is happy with Buhari and indeed the whole of south-South Nigeria views this appointment as one nomination that will set the ship of governance into motion and a motion that will accommodate all Nigerians from all walks of life.

So many people have commented on the nomination of Udoma Udo Udoma by the presidency, while a vast majority of the people has thumbed it up, people of very shallow minds, people who have since perfected the art of lazy layers of reasoning are of the negative opinions. They cite irrelevant reasons and excuses as to why Udoma Udo Udoma should not have been considered into the FEC.

But then, President Muhammadu Buhari, the nation’s leader at a time like this understands that Nigeria needs to move forward irrespective of political colouration. The President Understands that in as much as he belongs to a political Party, he will not have to sacrifice merit on the altar of Politics and that defines his choices of ministers.

A quick look at the list as sent to the Senate and made to the knowledge of Nigerians show a mix of politicians, professionals and technocrats. Senator Udoma Udo Udoma falls into all of these classes. But the,n Udoma in this case should be seen as more professional and technocratic than political. This does not mean that Udoma is not a politician. He is. Otherwise how do you explain the fact that he served Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District meritoriously as her distinguished Senator for eight straight years?

The positives over the appointment of Udoma by Buhari far outweigh the negatives. If one will have to reason why the Ikot Abasi man was found fit to be so nominated by Buhari, then the answer will be that Udoma’s choice is on merit. There is no right thinking individual who can fault Buhari on this singular nomination.

The nominee is one Nigerian whose honesty, dedication to service and commitment to duties are legendary. This is a personality that has since carved an enviable niche for himself; his tentacles are spread over everywhere and his footprints stands the taste of time. To me his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari is divine. This is because in this era of change where the President is shopping for a Pan Nigerian person to help move Nigeria forward, Udoma because the answer. He has been diligent in his work and faithful in his calling. He is never found wanting. Not a new man to public service, set to demonstrate what he knows how to do best.

Earlier, Udoma upon the return of Democracy in 1999 had contested and won elections into the upper hallowed chambers of the National Assembly where he represented Eket Senatorial District for eight years. During his time, he fought whole heartedly and open-mindedly for the resources of the people. He rallied and with the help of his colleagues, he was able to attract Government attention to the predicaments and the unfortunate situation of the people of the Niger Delta region. That was not all. He aligned forces with former Governor of the State Obong Victor Attah and Senator Ita Solomon Enang who was then in the House of Representatives, together, the battle for resource control was won.

After this, Udoma did not demonstrate greed and emptiness. He avoided carefully the temptation of running for the Governorship of Akwa Ibom State after his eight years in the Senate. He also avoided the temptation of returning to the Senate. He was qualified to have contested the Governorship seat of the State but he restricted himself. Some politicians would have, with the resource control battle won ran speedily to contest so that he will be a major beneficiary of the money that will accrue to the state. At least, he was going to be in charge, the one to circulate and supervise, in fact superintend over the allocation of the money.

But that is not the style of Udoma Udoma. His style is quiet and compelling. His style is to stay with the people, support the people, help the people, develop the people, encourage the people and build bridges of unity across the divide. The allure of capitalizing on his position to victimize innocent Nigerians is not related to Sen. Udoma Udo Udoma.

These noble legacies of Udoma were quickly identified by the Federal Government and other International agencies who sought for the distinguished Senator’s services. We can recall he was invited to head the United African Companies. He did excellently well. He delivered to the impression of Nigerians and the whole of Africa.

Udoma  Udoma have been and is and will continue to be a detribalized Nigerian, a leader with the fear of God and a man who does not rest until he gets something done. What Nigeria and especially Akwa Ibom needs today is a leader that understands what leadership means. We need a man who can stand in the gap for the people. For me, I see Udoma Udoma in this appointment as a man on whose shoulders rests the aspirations of our people. I see him as a model that should be studied. I am optimistic, I am certain the he will deliver to the admiration of the people.

This is because the Udoma’s appointment is one that has united the people of the state. This is an appointment that has been largely celebrated by Akwa Ibom people of all walks and life. We celebrate this nomination; Akwa Ibomites either in the PDP, APC, Labour, Accord and other parties are standing up tall to celebrate this appointment. Few ramblers notwithstanding, methinks it’s a Buhari’s first and Akwa Ibom people are proud to be a part of his first.

We must be proud that the President has identified the talent and sincerity in Udoma. We must be proud that in this era where politics have since beclouded the sense of reasoning of some of our supposed elites, someone in the mould of Senator Udoma Udo Udoma has stood out as one of the many remnants that is now the Chief corner stone for our state
We celebrate this appointment and wish Udoma a sweet sail as he is expected to take a bow at the senate during his screening. We are optimistic that Udoma Udo Udoma will as usual make us proud. He needs to ignore detractors and his work should be of the people, for the people and by the people. I am certain he will deliver. CONGRATULATIONS SIR, AKWA IBOM AND NIGERIA ARE PROUD OF YOU
