Udo Ekot Street residents send save our soul message to Government

Residents of Udo Ekot Street in Mbiaobong Etoi have called on the state government to please come to their aid as they can no longer gain access to their various houses due to flood that has submerged the area.

The attention of The INK Newspaper was drawn recently when a story came in that a Primary School Pupil was drown in the flood on his way back from school.

The road which links two communities- Ikot Antem (NDENG ) and Ikot Atai is in a total state of disrepair. Some of the houses along the street have been abandoned by their owners because of poor state of the road.

The street which has been in that condition since the construction of Oron road has become a source of worry to the residents due to flooding. Most of the properties along the road are destroyed by rain water.
The problem of Udo Etok Street is not just flood but erosion that has washed away some portion of the road.

Most residents result to using alternatives routs to get various houses. When we visited the alternative street, the story was almost the same as so many spots on street was flooded with water.

The Village head of Mbiabong Ikot Antem. Eteidung Bassey Eyita, lamented the continuous rejection of the area by government for so many years.
He explained that the street has been in that condition since Oron road was constructed.  “Our problem here is road, we do not have motor able road here, if it rains now people’s houses will be flooded, they will be no road for people to pass, so we are crying to the government to please come to our aid, government has us to tar this street for so many years but we are yet to see that promise come to fulfillment”.

Eteidung Bassey Eyita said that the road was beyond community project, he explained that the community has tried so many times to fill some parts of the deep spots but each time it rains heavily the sand will be washed away.
Another user of the road Mr. Victor Akpan, pleaded with the executive governor of the state to extend his developmental projects to their community.
A car owner in the area who preferred anonymity said “each time I come back from work, i have to park my car along Oron road because I cannot drive into my compound. Anything can happen to the car because it is parked along the road. The situation is very very worrisome”.

A student residing in the street also called on the state and local government to look into the plight “If it rains now you will not be able to stand here because the whole place will be flooded even the house here will be filled with water. The government really has to help us”.

The issue of flooding has really racked havoc in many parts of the state during the current raining season. The state government has to look for ways in which it will alleviate the predicament of its citizens.
