The Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Elder Samuel Ikon has pledged the resolve of the 5th Assembly to institute legislations that will promote and support the activities of Forestry Association of Nigeria.
The speaker stated this last week when the national president of Forestry Association of Nigeria, Malam Salami Ado and other executive members of the association including Dr. Val Attah and other forestry dons from the University of Uyo paid him a courtesy call in his office.
Elder Ikon who described the 5th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as “the peoples’ Assembly” said that the House is always committed to the service of those whose mandate they came to the Assembly so that posterity will judge them right.
He told the national president that Akwa Ibom has been able to maintained 80% capital ratio in its appropriation and commended the executive for its strict fiscal discipline which has resulted in the uncommon transformation they have witness in the State.
The speaker said that the services of Forestry Association of Nigeria is needed now more than ever before adding that more awareness and education review relevant laws on the green environment should be mounted to sensitize which can help to avert impending environmental problems and crisis that may come tomorrow.
He maintained that the House has set-up a committee to look into a sustainable development initiative and also put in place enabling laws that will ensure sustainability of the current development in the State. He promised to mobilize relevant organs of government to ensure a speedy review and passage of laws that promote and protect forestry activities.
On his part, the national president of Forestry Association of Nigeria, Malam Salami Ado told the speaker that they were in Akwa Ibom for the 36th Annual general conference of the Association that is holding in Uyo, he said that the association governs and regulate all forestry activities in Nigeria and beyond, adding that members of the association gathers annually for their general conference which their deliberations are always sent to government and those proceedings are always used to formulate government policies on environment and forestry.
The national president further said that the conference has proposed a bill that will soon be sent to the House of Assembly for legislation and pleaded with the speaker and members of the State House of Assembly to ensure that the bill gets accelerated hearing when it comes to the House.
He commended the speaker and the State Governor for what he described as a massive development of the State and prayed God to give them more grace to complete all the ongoing projects in the State which he said are at the advance stage.
