THE INK Newspaper shone brightly over the weekend at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Dinner Night/Award Night when it Assistant Editor, Kenneth Jude won the prestigious award of Best Columnist of the Year. His column, LUCID VERSES was adjudged by a team of adjudicators to be the best in terms of content, factualness and balance.
The event was part of activities marking the 2016 NUJ Press Week which started on Monday 5th December and was rounded off with a thanksgiving service at The Apostolic Church, Ewet District Headquarters on Sunday 11th December.
This year’s award was fiercely contested with more stringent criteria unlike those of the previous years. In the recent past, only three articles were called for entry, but it was increased to ten this year hence making it the most competitive contest in recent times.
Receiving the award, Kenneth Jude who was filled with joy, said he was grateful to God for being there for him at all times. He thanked the NUJ Chairman, Elder Patrick Albert for being a father and pillar of support for young journalists. “I want to Say that this award means the world to me. Coming from a professional body like the NUJ makes it even more special. I thank the NUJ Chairman, Elder Patrick Albert for his faith, love and support for young journalists.
I also thank the NUJ and the committee for deeming it fit to give me this award. I am grateful. I cannot conclude without paying special tributes to my boss, Mr. Nsibiet John for giving me the platform to express my talent. To my friends, colleagues and family, I say a very big thank you.’’
He promised to keep doing his best to ensure that he keeps soaring higher in his works. He pledged not to rest on his laurels even as he thanked the committee for providing gift items for the award winners in addition to the plaque, noting that the committee did excellently well.
In a related development, the Supervising Editor of THE INK Newspaper, Emmanuel Akpan emerged the Secretary of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Akwa Ibom State chapter after defeating his closest rival, Aniekan Udofia of Atlantic Fm over the weekend.
Emmanuel Akpan won the election with 13 votes to defeat Aniekan Udofia who scored 11 votes. In his victory speech, the newly elected Secretary promised to extend a hand of fellowship to those who lost the election and especially his main opponent. He noted that the new executive will work harmoniously with all stakeholders to ensure that SWAN is taken to another level.
He thanked delegates who stood by him despite all the pressure mounted against them to do otherwise. He promised to repay the fate reposed in him.
He also thanked members of the Federated Chapel especially the Chairman, Comrade Inimfon Silas for their volumes of encouragement and support. He promised not to let them down while pledging to work with his new EXCO with the aim of bringing back sanity and transparency to the body.
