The 2016 edition of Chief Sunny Ibanga Unity cup football competition ended on Sunday 25th December, 2016, with Nto Ikan carting away with the final trophy after beating Nto Essien Ndem 5 – 3 on a penalty shootout.
The match which was played at Utu Ikot Ekpenyong, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, witnessed both teams exhibiting great football artistry to the admiration of the capacity crowd that thronged the venue to watch the final encounter. Thus, after both teams failed to score the needed goal that would have separated each other, went straight into penalty kicks.
Speaking during the presentation of prizes to the teams, the sponsor of the competition and a Community Leader of Ikpe Ikot Ekpenyong, Chief Sunny Ibanga used the occasion to thank all the participating teams in the competition for displaying the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play throughout the competition. He encouraged them to be more obedient and proactive in their endeavours, while promising his unalloyed support and commitment to the development of the area.
Chief Ibanga also promised the youths of the area of gainful employment through his scheme, which has a very strong relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari’s led Federal Government of Nigeria. He donated the sum of one million naira (N1m) to the overall winners of the tournament, Nto Ikan, while Nto Essien Ndem went home with the sum of N500,000 as first runners-up and Nto Ototo went home with N150,000 as the 3rd place winners.
The occasion attracted some personalities including the Personal Assistant to the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Patty Etete, Barr. Austin Mbeh, Hon. Michael and former members of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, former councilors and community leaders.
Speakers at the occasion including Chief Sunny Ibanga and Mr. Patty Etete used the occasion to pay glowing tributes to the Managing Director of NDDC, Obong Nsima Ekere for his support and encouragement towards the competition.
Highpoint of the event was the presentation of trophy and consolation prizes to participating teams.
