Uyo City Polytechnic last Friday matriculated 2000 students into various departments and faculties. This was in completion of the admission procedures required by the school to officially welcome the new intakes into ND1 and HND1.
The matriculation ceremony took place at the School Campus at Nduetong Oku in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking at the event, the Proprietor of the Polytechnic who was represented by Mr. Enobong Etukudo commended the students for being successfully admitted into the School and charged them to take their studies serious. He advised them to desist from any form of violence and exploit the enabling environment given them to study, adding that the institution will not welcome violent activities.
Mr. Etukudo used the opportunity to thank those who have contributed in a way or the other to keep the flag of the polytechnic flying as well as the host community for their cooperation.
In
his address, the Rector, Mr. Ifiok Akpabio said that the Polytechnic,
in terms of facilities and pedigree of staff, has been adjudged by the
National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) as one of the best in the
country, adding that plans have been concluded to introduce new courses
such as Finance/Banking and Insurance, Science Lab Technology, Civil and
Mechanical Engineering, Building Technology and Information
Communication Technology(ICT) to boost the existing curriculum of the
institution.
He charged the students to avail themselves the available opportunity and contribute their quota to the body of scholarship to enable them push the frontiers of knowledge which is power in the society.
The Rector while wishing the new students a successful completion of their programme, maintained that the Polytechnic has evolved a framework that will not only erase student’s perceptions, but redirect their mind to the indispensability of a holistic embrace of scholarship.
According to him “I have to quickly remind you, at this juncture, that, the primary aim of coming here is to study. Other issues like socials are secondary. When you finally graduate, nobody will care about what kind of posts you held while in school, the kind of dress you used to wear, rather would they want to know what kind of grade you made. It will be very absurd, a wasteful academic voyage if you leave here with an ordinary pass. I am not in a way discouraging you from social activities in the school. I am only emphasizing a balance between academic and social activities.”
Mr. Akpabio strongly noted that the institution will not welcome cultism and other anti-social activities in the school and will not hesitate to throw out any student who becomes a clog in the wheel of the progress of the institution even as he called for synergy of efforts; so that together the school will carve a ninch for its self in the comity of polytechnic in Nigeria.
Chatting with our reporter, Samuel Sam who is an ND1 student in the Department of Computer Science expressed happiness to God and thanked the management of the institution for giving him the opportunity to study in a prestigious institution like Uyo City Polytechnic.
High point of the event was the declaration of loyalty by the students to the polytechnic.
