2015: What A’Ibom people must know BY JOSEPH OKON

2015: What A’Ibom people must know BY JOSEPH OKON

As Akwa Ibomites gradually transit into another election year that will herald the coming in of a new leader who will lead the state, Akwa Ibom people should not allow sentiments to becloud their sense of reasoning at this stage when their critical perception is needed in sustaining the uncommon transformation of the present administration.

It is very sad that some less informed persons in the state have formed their opinions in empathy of politicians who have contributed to the underdevelopment of this state. These old men of yesteryears who throughout their stay in office could not leave any tangible evidence on ground, are looking for a way of coming back to steal and revenge, should they be given the opportunity.

I agree that politics is a game of interest, but people should understand that apart from being a game of interest, it is also a process that leaders emerged to lead God’s children on earth.
As long as we accept and agree that every leadership comes from God, we should also accept and allow the will of God to be done even when it’s against our interest. Every leader has a forerunner and mentor even Jesus Christ was not without a forerunner and mentor.

Even at that great council in heaven when God wanted to choose a saviour for mankind among His sons, he ask this important question, “who will go and redeem mankind?”He got volunteers but settled for Jesus Christ who had good intentions. This fell into God’s plan for His people. Why then is it that the Governor, having evaluated his appointees and choosed Udom Emmanuel; is opposed on every side? It is high time we abolished this self-centred thinking and began to think maturely towards the development of our dear state.

Why do we prefer to kindle our interest and rather allow candidates to be imposed on us? Why have we allowed selfishness to make us think we alone should always be in the advantaged position and not others?

Today it is common knowledge that some less-informed persons have decided to view the choice of the SSG as an imposition without considering first what Akwa Ibom stands to gain from this epitome of sustainable development. If the people of Akwa Ibom state have decided to zone the 2015 governorship seat to Eket Senatorial District which Udom comes from, is it not his right to contest? So why is Udom Emmanuel’s ambition the subject of all political discussions in town?
Election like every other thing has a procedure. When it is time, the party decides on what they want and whoever is not comfortable with the party’s decision is free to challenge his or her popularity using another party.

When any government is approaching an end like this, succession plan becomes the top most priority otherwise, the monumental achievements of the outgoing administration will be a forgotten issue. To achieve an effective change, the one in power must have known already the certain qualities he is looking for in his/her successor, and to be sure of his bid, he must, as a matter of necessity, carry out certain tests and experiments on the individual to see if he can deliver and live up to his expectations, if given the opportunity. It is unfortunate that all those who went through this leadership test and experiment could not prove themselves competent enough for the master’s approval except Udom Emmanuel. So, if the master after conducting the test has decided to settle on Udom; what is wrong about that?
Just as the anointing oil refused to pour on Jesse’s older sons who laboured to qualify for the kingship position, the same oil has refused to pour on other labourers who have positioned themselves as the next governor.

Although it is natural for man to oppose anything that is to his disadvantage, but this cannot mean that it is not from God. They say Udom is new arrival, and has not laboured in the party. But it should be noted that there are two types of party membership, the numerical and contributive membership. Udom Emmanuel has been an active financial member of the PDP for many years and his aspiration has long existed, waiting for the right time to manifest.

From the days of old till date, God’s way of choosing leaders was clearly exemplified in the choice of Jacob, instead of Esau, as well as the ejection of Saul for David. God rejected Saul as King because of a single transgression and choosed an unknown David instead. Such is the case in Akwa Ibom.
The saying that God resists the proud and gives more grace to the humble is really true. If Udom Emmanuel’s humility and integrity has been noticed by his Boss and is to be awarded by God, should there be any cause for alarm?

People should leave sentiments out of the 2015 governorship result and rather think of what the state stands to benefit from such a governor. We must begin to think of Akwa Ibom on a collective ground for the good of our generations. It is noteworthy that of all aspirants for the 2015 governorship race, Udom Emmanuel alone is the man that can guarantee and ensure a brighter future for Akwa Ibom in the area of education to industrialization, human capital development, infrastructural development, and other areas which will greatly improve the socio economic wellbeing of people of this state.

There are certain misgivings in some quarters that Mr Udom Emmanuel will be a stooge to governor Akpabio. This insinuation only exist in their imaginations and does not in any way reflect the character of the amiable SSG whose record of honesty and integrity is not in doubt. The word “stooge” has nothing to do with Udom Emmanuel since it’s all about dishonesty.  For him to have risen to the position of Executive Director in a big private financial institution of international standard like the Zenith bank, it has a lot to do with his time-tested honesty and integrity which is not common in our nation today. The SSG once told this story of how he was introduced to a politician in the Western part of the country some years back, he said he was asked by the person if he could kill, cheat, and steal as conditions he would fulfil to have his support. In his answer, he replied that if these conditions are what he must meet before becoming a governor, he would rather bow out.

It took him years to research and finally understand that one can be a governor without killing, cheating or stealing. He is one of the few persons in the world who will never compromise his integrity for any reason. Godswill Akpabio knows what Udom Emmanuel is made-up of and will not ask him to do anything demoting his integrity.

The new direction is that the global world is looking for those who have been experts in resource management to take up leadership positions in states and countries, including Akwa Ibom. Truly Udom Emmanuel will guarantee prosperity for all Akwa Ibomites.
