It is no longer news that Barr Ahmed Gulak the Political Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan was relieved of his appointment last Tuesday. What is however not clear especially in some quarters is the reason why the former Presidential aide was removed in the wake of the controversy that has engulfed the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic party. Pronto Ahmed Gulak had been in the state a fortnight ago to inaugurate the South-South Advisory region of the Elders Council of the Goodluck Support Group, GSG. Gulak arrived and was well received by the state Governor Godswill Obot Akpabio. The Adamawa state born politician did his assignment and left after creating controversial issues that today has contributed to swallowing him up.
Although competent sources from Abuja had informed our reporter that the decision to sack Gulak may not have been as a result of the fallout of the visit of the Barrister to the state but the controversies he left must have also contributed to his sack even as there are informations that the former presidential aide must have had one or two infractions at the nation’s seat of power.
THE INK Newspaper can report authoritatively that Gulak who was received by the state Governor though in absentia was allowed into a bullet proof jeep and with two escort vehicles attached to him. He was ferried on the Sunday he arrived to the prestigious Ibom Five Star Hotel and golf club. And the same team had also dropped him at Ewet Housing Estate were he commissioned the Elders Advisory council. After the commissioning on Monday, the team also escorted him to the Airport where he boarded and flew back to link Adamawa state on a function according to Abuja sources on the instructions of the President. The state Governor is said to have known already that Gulak is on his way out of the villa due to some negative reports against him, a source from Abuja told our reporter.
But Gulak is said not to have been fair to the President, Governor Godswill Akpabio and other aspirants from Eket Senatorial District. At the inauguration of the council, Gulak those who attended the meeting informed our reporter that the legal luminary had heaped praises on the erstwhile secretary to the state Government Obong Umana Umana whom he described in good words and also had hinted that the presidency is happy with Umana.
THE INK reporter gathered that this was perhaps the greatest error Gulak had to make as it was quickly interpreted that Umana’s ambition had gotten the backing of the President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. A source who refused to be named said Obong Umana had already bought a bus for GSG Elders council of the south-South and had also bribed Gulak with the sum of two million dollars. And that must have been the reason Gulak resorted to singing the praises of Obong Umana Umana all through. Supporters of Umana Umana had already began boasting that the President has approved and will ensure that Umana wins the Governorship of Akwa Ibom State after the Gulak’s position on the ex SSG. Poor Gulak he does not know the intricacies of Akwa Ibom Politics. However since Obong Godswill Akpabio has decided that Umana Umana can never succeed him, it had become apparent for the state Governor to raise an alarm accusing Gulak of trying to create disharmony in Akwa Ibom State. The alarm was raised through the Obong Paul Ekpo led PDP in the state.
It is the belief of the State Governor Obong Godswill Akpabio that if Gulak was not checked, his actions will be capable to creating disharmony, total confusion and may lead to anarchy in the state. A source very close to Governor Akpabio had informed THE INK that the Governor raised an alarm to favour himself and protect his position on 2015 where he has since reasoned that 2015 belongs to Eket Senatorial District. Our source said if that is the position of the Government of Akwa Ibom State, Gulak, an Hausa man has no reason whatsoever to come and alter things for the state and coupled with the fact that the President does not want to get into unnecessary hiccups again, he had to wield the big stick and send Gulak off the presidential Villa. It was learnt that it was not difficult for the President to be convinced on why his ex political adviser should leave the Villa with immediate effect.
A source told THE INK that Gulak was the speaker of the Gongola state House of Assembly as at the time the former Chairman of the PDP Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was the state Governor and that Gulak was Tukur’s man at the presidency. Information monitored had revealed that while the war between Tukur and Nyako had rages on, the erstwhile presidential aide had believed that he will be a beneficiary of the clash to emerge as the next Governor of Adamawa state. To that extent, he is said to have gotten very close to the former Chairman until the powers that be sacked Tukur. Obong Umana Umana is said to have been quite close to Tukur and was also close to Gulak so upon the exit of Tukur, Gulak was like a saving strength to UOU, a security information revealed. And it was then not surprising to have Gulak hailed Umana even when the PDP in the state has zoned the governorship to Eket Senatorial District. To an extent sources say Gulak paid for speaking more than he was supposed to.
