UNIUYO students in fresh protest

UNIUYO students in fresh protest
BY VICTOR UFOT

Students mainly of the faculty of Engineering in the University of Uyo last Tuesday embarked on a peaceful protest at the Permanent site of the University of Uyo over what they described as “unfriendly policies of the University’s management.”

The school management had ordered all students that are staying in the hostel to vacate their various hostels once they are through with their second semester examination.

The protesting students were mainly 300 and 400 level students of the faculty residing in the hostel and are currently undergoing their Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) programme wondered while the school management would ask them to vacate their hostel when they are still on their S.I.W.E.S. programme.

According to one of the students who spoke to this reporter on the condition of anonymity described the decision of the management as unfriendly and wicked “the management is just unfriendly, in fact wicked to the students especially those of us in the faculty of Engineering, how do they expect us to part take in the ongoing SIWES when they ask us to leave the hostel?” He wondered.

It took the timely intervention of the Dean student Affairs Dr. Mrs. Isongesit P. Solomon and the Chief Security Officer of the institution to stop the protesting students.

The Dean promised to take the problems of the students to the vice chancellor of the university but advised the students to remain law abiding and not to take the law into their hands.

THE INK NEWSPAPER was later informed that the management has shifted the date of vacation from the hostel to 9th of next month.

It will be recalled that on June 12 last year the university of Uyo was shut down completely after one life and properties worth millions of naira were lost to riot by students of the institution due to protest.
