The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Don. Awunah has revealed that over 40 cult groups are operating within the State. CP Awunah made the disclosure on Tuesday in his office during an interaction session with journalists.

He said based on the analysis conducted by the command and arrest made so far in Akwa Ibom State some suspects have confessed to belong to one cult group or the other and it numbering over 40, alleging that some of the cult groups are being controlled and used by some politicians to cause problems as well as disturb the peace of the State.

CP Don Awunah who frowned at the actions and supports by some politicians who are always throwing their weight behind some of the cultists, noted that for crime to be reduced in the State, residents of the State should always give the security agencies useful information and the needed cooperation.

The Commissioner of Police while disclosing that though Akwa Ibom State is rated the lowest in crime index the country with the State government providing over 70% of the patrol vehicles including other logistics, added in the case of Ukanafun LGA which has been in the news for murdering, kidnappings, cult clashes and other criminal activities in recent times, the CP said many arrest have been made and vowed to bring the culprits to book.
When asked the significant of the Show of Force that was conducted by all the security agencies in some major restive streets, roads and villages on Monday in the State which was the Democracy Day celebration, the CP said the Show of Force is one of the crime reduction strategies, adding that essentially it is design to assure the members of the public of the collaboration and the coming together of security agencies to ensure that crime and criminality are checkmate.

He added that the show is a statement to tell people that all the security agencies are one. In his word, “We are not showing force that we are carrying arms, but we were coming together to reassure members of the public. You must understand that internal security or law enforcement is better achieved through collaborations. It was to show members of the public that we are there to protect lives and properties. So, that was why we moved round the town.”

He reassured members of the public that all the security agencies are working together which he said that was the major vocal point of show of force, adding that though security agencies wear different uniforms and called different names, but are working together to fight crime in Akwa Ibom State.

He used the opportunity to call on all well-meaning citizens and residents of Akwa Ibom State to support the Police and all other security agencies in the State by volunteering vital information that will help eradicate crime in the State as security is arguably a collective concern and responsibility.

The police boss thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel for being supportive to the Police in its onerous task of safe guarding the people and interests of the State by provision of critical logistics which has given renewed vigor to the Officers and Men of Akwa Ibom State Police Command even as he warned that crimes issues must not be politicised in other to have a peaceful State.
